Hi all,I have a hovabator with 12 delaware eggs in it.They are on day 14 today.I picked up a acu-rite temp and humidity monitor yesterday so i could see the humidity. The temp monitor on the new one is reading different than the plastic temp monitor than game with my bator. new one reads 99 the original reads 104.What one to believe?

i had this same problem... but my stick thermometer broke.. so i just go by the acu-rite now

I'm having the same problem, 2 different readings. One from a cheapy bulb one and the other is a digital thermometer and hygrometer. I'm only on day 2 and I'm heading out to the neighbors to borrow one of theirs. I'm just going to believe what the two closest ones say.

I think you could drive yourself crazy with this!

I just checked again and the Acu-Rite was reading 99 and dropped to 97 right in front of me.The plastic one that came with the bator is reading103.All 12 eggs are alive and i would hate to loose them. This is the second batch i got threw the mail.None of the first batch lived. So i got about a $100.00 bucks in these 12.OUCH...

If you have a medical thermometer you can stick it in there at to see which it matches with. I use medical thermometers to calibrate all my other thermometers.

You can also stick the thermometer in icewater an see how close it is to 32*F but being accurate at 32* does not mean it is accurate at 100*, many cheep thermometers drift pretty far by then. Thats why I use the medical thermometers. 99% of them are with in 1/2 a degree of accurate.

Standardizing to ice water and boiling water, i was going that way. But i gave in and stuck our electronic thermometer about 2" in from the top.
An AcuRite Thermometer/hygrometer has been reading 100F
a cheap $1 stick thermometer from WalWart reads 106F.
The electronic thermometer for human use reads anywhere from 98.9 to 109F.

I now have two concerns. first is this 22Qt cooler too small? within seconds of the light turning on, the human thermometer shot up ten degrees. second, i wish i had bought a meter with a thermocouple that could use a water wiggly thing. i so see the purpose in those now!

i am pretty sure all local stores will not receive a new shipment of larger coolers until the spring or late spring. i'm not too sure "elma fudd" (she is pictured in avatar) will go for sacrificing one of our plastic coolers.
As for the temperature meters reading all over the place. i'm going to take the tube cover of the electronic human thermometer, fill it with olive oil and insert it through the lid in a permanent mount. this should serve as a jury rigged "water wiggly." I'll just not use the human thermometer in this project while "elma fudd" is around.

Welp, bad idea. the darn thermometer case leaked and now i've a puddle of oil in the bottom of my styrobator. i'm not sure.... i'm sure this will have an affect on respiration through pores of the egg. ARGGGG!

i drilled a hole in the bottom and drain the oil out of the bater.
