My Coop
So this is the second time this week I've had weirdness in the coop. Today I collected all the eggs but one of my marans still hadn't layed. I put her in the coop and closed the door so she wouldn't be bothered by my cockeral who is a bit of an arse toward her. Any way when I went back to check on her she had layed two eggs! Both identical in size but both very soft shelled. She seems OK and went straight out to have a drink and some feed.

Earlier this week she layed some eggs with weird calcium deposits. The weather has been hot here for the past few days and my cockeral is mean toward her. Could this be causing egg problems?

I think egg laying is a fussy business. Generally it takes a whole day for a chicken to lay one egg and most of that time is spent forming the shell. But, various things can go wrong to effect this. The more stressed a chicken is the more problems she will have. It sounds like the rooster is giving her too much trouble. I have tried to keep roosters 3 times in the last 4 years and each time the rooster will pick 1 to 3 hens so much that I have to cull the rooster. Some people get sweet roosters. I haven't been so lucky. I wish I could. One year one of my hens raised 3 new chicks for me. That was so nice.
