Oh no!!!! I'm so sorry. But please don't blame yourself, that just causes more stress and won't help at all.

It happens. Don't blame yourself. Those babies wanted to run free and freedom does have a danger attached to it. I know I would be beating myself up also but make a note to yourself to do it later, when you are stronger, okay? And then not too much or for too long. You still have 10 little lives to celebrate.

Do you have any snapping turtles in your pond/lake? I've heard of them making ducklings disappear real fast.

Sad to report that the 6 pack is minus one

went down to feed them and do a head count since I didn't get out of bed yesterday and sadly one was missing. I walked the pond twice, mustered up the energy and got into the canoe and paddled out to the Island, no baby there either..Not sure what happened, don't even want to imagine what happened or think about it. I'm so mad at myself for being to tired to take care of them like I know they need. I tried to get the remaining 5 to come out of the water so I could put them in the pin but they weren't having it. No more 6 pack

Don't be too hard on yourself. If you free-range, you are going to have losses now and then.

Tough part of life.

Doesn't sound like they wanted to be cooped up, and are probably happier being free. Hope the rest make it.

We do have snapping turtles bit only females, which are not known to be agrressive, the TWRA traps our snapping turtles and uses them for research so I am not sure it was a turtle this time. Plus with the weather being cool they should be dormant for now ...We do have big cat fish and my husband said they have been known to eat ducklings... Idk, I could go over 100 different scenarios and it wouldn't matter, I am so bummed and feel like a bad momma right now, but they didn't want to be pinned up, so it was a catch 22 for me. Do I selfishly keep them locked up or do I let them lose... Either decision came at a cost to their over all happiness... I just hope no more fall victim to whatever took its sibling...Btw, I don't have my glasses on right now so everything I am typing looks like a big ole blur to me, sorry if I have mispelled anything

No, you are not a bad duck mother. I'm so sorry the little one isn't anywhere to be found and for your loss. You did the right thing by giving them their freedom and you will probably never know what happened. That happened to me also many years ago when two of our dogs took off in the middle of the night and went up to visit the neighbors dog. It was about 15 degrees out side but that didn't stop them. DH asked if I thought we should go hunt them down and I said no, it was 2 AM and they would be sitting on the front porch by 5 when he got up cold and contrite. Only one came home and she didn't show until late that afternoon when we went home from work to check on them. We looked everywhere for the older dog, a Schnauzer but we never found her. Neighbors saw them but like us, figured they would head for home as they always did after making their rounds. We figured the younger dog, our border collie, stayed with her until she died and then came home. I remember opening the car door and she low crawled to me as if saying, I'm sorry mommy, I couldn't leave her. To this day I feel the same as you do but you didn't know what happened would happen any more than I did. And yes, not knowing what happened is the worst. But like I said. You had no way of knowing and beating yourself up as mentioned is only going to stress you out and you don't need that right now.

If you had kept the little ones penned up, you would have been doing that for you. What you did, giving them their freedom, you did for them. Bless you. It was an unselfish act and that little one was free as nature intended for how ever long it lived. You gave it the gift of life and the gift of freedom. I think it was a pretty lucky little duck!

On a brighter note, you know those glasses only help you if you wear them..........

As for catfish. Delicious fried golden with a side of hush puppies and a big bowl of fried potatoes with onions. Just saying.
