The comb on number five is a single comb, silkies have walnut combs, it's ok it happens sometimes. Not a big deal unless you are showing or breeding.

We might try to get the rooster to help us hatch eggs if we can prevent it from crowing long enough

Ok but be aware that when you hatch you are bound to get more boys and you'll have to find homes for them. If I was you I'd just buy sexed chicks to be safe

i would do that but when we tried that we ordered 6 chicks and now we have 2 and one has wry neck

Oh no! Well that's odd, but I understand why you wouldn't want to do that again. Just have a plan for those extra boys.

I have a silkie rooster that I can’t actually keep but I have him still.... for now.
He only crows at dawn and you can’t hear him when the windows are closed.
It lasts about an hour or less. Not constant.
He also keeps quiet after I go out and tend to them every morning.
We have woods behind our house and not too close to any neighbors but one compared to every other house on our street.
I am hoping we find a new house to buy soon in a place that I can keep a roo in RI. But the market stinks and I live in a state that doesn’t have many options for a “farm.”
