2 Mystery Chicks

Hello,

I have 2 chicks that we have no idea what they are. We were only told that they are hens, and I hope that is true. They are about 6 to 8 weeks old. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Kinda looked mixed, are those just barnyard? Or did they have specific breeds?

I believe the darker one is a roo.

One more question, are the tail feathers picked from the dark one?

I agree the first is giving me roo-vibes, second looks like a pullet. Knowing where you got them is always helpful determining breed, but I'm looking at them thinking barnyard mix.

I kind of got the rooster vibe from the dark one too. (S)He is always running around pretty fast, checking out what everyone else is doing, is the most aggressive out of all of them, just looks totally different. I was hoping maybe it was one of the easter eggers that look like they don't have a butt. But maybe it looks like that because it had its tail plucked or didn't grow it in yet. The only white chickens they had on the farm as far as I know is white Marans, so maybe the other one is that mixed with something else? Thanks for all your input.

I did the test where you hang the chick by the scruff of the neck and his legs just dangled. Supposedly that means its a rooster. Is there any validity to this test?

i wouldnt hang any chicks by the scruff of the neck.top looks like a male, the bottom a pullet

I dont believe there is any use to that, seems sort of un-reliable, would you like a link to a better way of checking?
