I may be getting some chicks soon, and i want the flock to have as much variety as possible I'm not sure yet whether we are getting 6, 8 or 10. (The coop we plan on building is big enough for 10, but dad says we have to start out small...) SO my question is....

DO YOU SUGGEST WE GET 1 OF A BREED OR 2 OF A BREED?

If we get 6 that is, since tsc only has 5 different tubs at once im pretty sure, so if we get six, me might end up with 2 bantams, so they can stick together since they're so much smaller

I made sure to get two chicks of each of the breeds I really wanted, just "in case" something happened to one. Nothing has happened so I have a lot of different breeds with two chickens each.

If you are limited to a certain number (aka chicken math hasn't set in), then pick one of each.

I'm not sure if breed matters so much, by try to get pairs of chickens who will be the same size!

Personally, in my flock of pet chickens, I have three of each breed.
I have twelve chickens total.
My breeds are:

Buff Orpingtons
Buff Brahmas
Rhode Island R's
Dark Cornish Rock

They all seem to get along well. I have noticed though that the chicks tend to buddy up with other chicks of their own breed.

I'm doing the same thing. I got two of each just to better my chance of getting hens. Figured 50/50 outta a straight run. Plus having two of a breed will enable me to get a better judge on the characteristics of the breed than just one would - that is by having two if they have similar characters then I can assume it's the breed but if they are different then I know I have a chick that is a little rogue and not being true to it's breed.

I say definitely get two of each breed......Its less stressful on them.
I had to start small too. My husband said only 6 to start & I wanted a little of everything. But I couldn't get a little of everything at the same time because of the way the feed stores received/sold what I was wanting to keep in my flock didn't match up with what I had planned in my head............ SO I basically ended up deciding on getting 3 different varieties of birds, 2 birds each. I ended up with 2 Golden Comets, 2 Barred Rocks....and 2 Sicilian Buttercups...which were honestly a complete impulse buy bc they are so stinkin' pretty!

We got 3 of a kind and 3 different breeds for a total of nine chicks. We wanted a variety of egg colors so we got Leghorns (white eggs), Black Australorps (brown eggs) and Amerucanas (blue and green eggs). We also wanted a vareity of colors in our coop.
