2 or 3 Chickens?

4 to 6 is more reasonable for city chickens but if your city prohibits more than that, then you will have settle for the requirement plus one, if one dies.

Glad you are getting chickens!

I recommend you read the threads on "chicken math". We started with two laying hens, then we asked ourselves (as you are now), should we get 2, or 3? We decided on 3. Went to pick out our birds, decided that if we could do 3, might as well do 4. So we brought home 5.

Fast forward 8 months.

We have 7 hens in the yard, 5 bantam chicks in the brooder, and just sterilized the incubator in prep for our next hatch which we are setting on Sunday.

So you might as well just dive right in with both feet and get the most your space can handle now, because however many you think you want, you're only getting started, my friend. And I wish you much luck and joy with your chicken venture!

Yup, you all sound about right. My DH started out saying NO MORE than 5, so i got 5. Then I brought them home slowly in increments of 2 and 3. He also said NO ROOSTER, well, guess what? My favorite Polish Crested turned out to be a roo, and we just COULDNT get rid of Bobblehead! He's my FAVORITE ( aside fro Henwyn and Sophie, of course)

This year I tried out hatching, and DH groaned. He was happy when only one hatched, but since that one would be lonely, and could turn out to be a roo, I will need to make sure I have at least 2 hens to introduce to the flock, so on top of the 2 EE chickies in the basement now, (one which may/may not be a roo) I am on the prowl of the feed stores for about 2 more specific breeds.

Oh, and the two i have on order for the middle of March need to be figured in too.

I'm up to 10, with 2= chickies to be added in a few months with plenty of room for more!

At least the DH has agreed to expand the run even more for all my new chickens.
