Hey! We may have 2 possible broody hens right now at the same time!
One is our Buff Orpington hen, Setherina (who has successfully hatched some chicks once before) and the other is our Buff Cochin Bantam, Pumpkin (who has attempted to hatch some chicks a couple times before but was never successful). Setherina has been on-and-off lately...she has been just going into her nest box and taking a longer time to lay her egg than usual She would puff up and scream at anyone and would roll any eggs under her you gave her. Eventually she would get off the nest and go back to doing whatever she was doing. And when she free-ranges, she fluffs up and makes clucking broody hen noises when one of the roosters comes up to her. Pumpkin hasn't shown any signs of becoming broody. Just today we found her in a nest box, sitting on some eggs and clucking in that way that only broodies do.
And when our cat walked up to her nest, she gave him the worst stink-eye ever and stood up tall, glaring at him until he left. Luckily we took him away before she pecked his eyes out.
Oh and we technically have 3 broodies when we include our Parakeet, Carla.
But for chickens, we may have 2 broodies!
I guess they also know that Spring is here.
I will keep you updated if they do go broody!
