Welcome to BYC! I loved the introduction. I personally would just let him be happy with his shoes. Adding a female will completely change the dynamics of your relationship with Q. (& his shoes might be jealous.)

Hello! Welcome to BYC!Hi, I am new here. I've been visiting this site for a while as it pops up whenever I Google a Quail Question. I recently joined so I could get answers to my specific Questions. Seems to be a lot of knowledgeable Quail people here.
I have a single male California Quail "Q" he will be a year old in August. We rescued him out of a drain in the road, he was alone except for a dead sibling. We took him in and learning as we go have managed to keep him alive and well for 10 months now. He lives in a rather fancy little rabbit hutch on our front porch & despite being a bachelor seems to be Quite happy.
In the absence of a mate he has taken to loving shoes. Not just any shoes, in fact some he immediately attacks. There is one pair in particular that he "loves" the most. We have to leave them right outside his cage where he can see them and he will follow us anywhere if we have the shoes. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen!! Needless to say we absolutely love this silly bird & we want him to be happy.
Which brings me to my Query.... I would love for Q to have a friend, especially one of a female persuasion. Is it possible to buy one quail, is that even a good idea or is it possible to buy one or two fertile eggs to hatch so that Q can be a daddy? We have wild Quail in our yard all the time, they even come up on the porch and will occasionally go in his cage, if the door is open, and eat his food. Q just ignores them & as long as they stay away from his shoes he's fine.
Anyway.... Bit of a long introduction, sorry 'bout that, if you've read this far, than you!!
Any advice is appreciated!!![]()
