2 & Q

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

That was a great intro! I never heard of any poultry taking to shoes. Perhaps instead of a female, you could upgrade Q's shoes. I'd swing by Goodwill and find a fancy pair, sterilize them, and see what he thinks. :) He sure sounds entertaining, and that's so neat he gets visited by the wild ones!

Hi, I am new here. I've been visiting this site for a while as it pops up whenever I Google a Quail Question. I recently joined so I could get answers to my specific Questions. Seems to be a lot of knowledgeable Quail people here.

I have a single male California Quail "Q" he will be a year old in August. We rescued him out of a drain in the road, he was alone except for a dead sibling. We took him in and learning as we go have managed to keep him alive and well for 10 months now. He lives in a rather fancy little rabbit hutch on our front porch & despite being a bachelor seems to be Quite happy.

In the absence of a mate he has taken to loving shoes. Not just any shoes, in fact some he immediately attacks. There is one pair in particular that he "loves" the most. We have to leave them right outside his cage where he can see them and he will follow us anywhere if we have the shoes. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen!! Needless to say we absolutely love this silly bird & we want him to be happy.

Which brings me to my Query.... I would love for Q to have a friend, especially one of a female persuasion. Is it possible to buy one quail, is that even a good idea or is it possible to buy one or two fertile eggs to hatch so that Q can be a daddy? We have wild Quail in our yard all the time, they even come up on the porch and will occasionally go in his cage, if the door is open, and eat his food. Q just ignores them & as long as they stay away from his shoes he's fine.

Anyway.... Bit of a long introduction, sorry 'bout that, if you've read this far, than you!!
Any advice is appreciated!! 🙂
Hello! Welcome to BYC!

Howdy, :frow and Welcome to Backyard Chickens.

Happy :ya to have you here with us. Enjoy your time here at BYC!

I wouldn't let the wild birds in his cage, they could be carrying a disease that could potentially kill Q and visa-versu. He might accept a 'new' mate but if he doesn't, then your stuck with another lone bird. Chances are that he is well adjusted to his single life and should be ok without other quail for company.

Thanks for joining our community! :celebrate
