Most chickens we purchase are born in the spring, and are 18 months old just in time for autumn. So, naturally, their first adult molt occurs in the fall. Chicks bought in the fall will end up having their first molt in the spring if they have it at the regular age of 18 months, but after that should molt in the fall as the days get shorter, if the resources I have been reading are correct.
