first question: i have all the free wood i need to build my coop, have all hardware, feeders, waterers, and anything else i can think of that i may need. my husband thinks it's a bad idea to have chickens cuz of the cost for bedding and feed. we are only going to have 4-6 chickens. how much does food and bedding usually cost per month? ballpark.

second question: alot of times when i'm on the forum and reading around, i loose the post question thingy at the top of the page. i can reply to posts, but can't add a post. so if i want to add a post, i have to log out and log back in. what am i doing wrong? it's driving me CRAZY. it's getting to the point where i don't want to be on this forum anymore. what do i do or whare can i find it when it disappears from my page?

First answer: Rough estimate $20-25 ish. Depends on how big of a coop and how much bedding/feed is needed, but rough estimate like for my 8x12 coop $20-25. I also have turkeys and goats though...

Second question: Maybe hit refresh?

If you want to add a post, all you need to do is click on the section you are in, which is highlighted in blue. For example, you are now in the Feeding and Watering Your Flock section. If you click on that, you will see the button to "add a post" or new topic.

Feed and bedding cost all depends on the type of birds you want and the type of bedding. It's really hard to calculate. Some people get old hay bales from farmers for next to nothing, and others want to use something fancier like wood shavings, which you might pay a ton for.

Obviously big hens eat more than banties, and there's a chart in Gail Damerow's book on raising chickens that tells approximately how much they should eat a day/week. I think it says on the bag of feed also. Free rangers eat a LOT less feed also. (And make way less mess of the bedding, so you don't have to replace it as often.).

Hope that helps out some.

hear i can get a large pag of wood shavings for $6 and hay and straw bales are typicaly 2.50-3.50 a bale. i paid $13 for a 50# bag of feed and $10 for a 50# bag of scratch. thoe my chick arent here yet so not sure yet how it will work out yet. plus i get free pine needles from my parents (well once they are out from under al the snow

very sick of snow and cold now!) and we have several lumber yards i plan on hitting up for shavings as well

.i also plan on using dried leaves and grass cuttings as well in my run area. there was a very nice litle article in mouther earth news about building up natural materials inn the run instead of leaving it bare, so i think i will give that a try.

I have 9 extra large breed chickens and when I go to the feed store I usually buy 50# Layena pellets, 25# Scratch & a bale of straw. It comes to about $20 and will last over a month and I think my chickens must be some kinda Orpington/Hog cross.

They also get a lot of greens, bugs, and kitchen scraps.

i didn't think it would cost too much. well he can kiss my butt. we're getting chickens. i already hauled all the free would and stuff. i'll have to try the refresh button and see if that works. thanks everyone
