Occasionally my children and I have a pet Coturnix Quail or two: tame them down. They can be the sweetest little things-- Some of the best pets we have ever had!
We went to our normal supplier of pet Quail.
I glanced everything over and all the birds seemed to be healthy to my eyes. I didn't notice anything wrong when I looked at sevral different birds... But there were MANY of them and apparently I missed a few things!
I looked around, but we still managed to bring home two sick quail from 2 separate pens today.
1) For the Coturnix adults we bought: I was shocked to see him up close once we got him home. Part of the problem was my EXTREMELY rambunctious daughter. She was ALL OVER the place in excitement the whole time that I could barely keep my head straight (It was pretty bad). I hope that doesn't sound horrible, but I was in a rush to get home and didn't look the two birds out of many that my son and daughter picked.
The female looks fine, but the males eyes are messed up. His EYELIDS are swollen and poofy. His third eyelid is not showing however. I have seen this along time ago in a few chickens at an auction. I have NEVER had this issue with my own birds so far. Therefore, I have him separated away from all other birds.
Is this treatable? My main purpose for buying a male and female adult was to incubate eggs so we can tame some of the youngsters we hatch.
I will post a picture of his eye. He seems to be doing well, he has been making his funny calls here and there.
2) In a whole separate building, but on the same property, is where we bought 12 very young Bob-White Quail. I am not sure than anything can be done. Their feathers are coming in, all except for their head feathers, so they aren't too young.
One quail, a little guy is not doing well. I don't think there is anything I can do, but he is very weak. I have the feeling he will not make it to morning. He is the smallest of the bunch, so perhaps he got trampled? He looks healthy other than his apparent inability to move around. I got him to take a few drinks for me with ease (by ever so delicately dipping the tiniest amount of his beak in the water *without* force feeding him). A few minutes before I gave him the drink, we caught him laying on his back. I corrected his position, he tried to take of running, but he fell over and couldn't get off of his side.
If there is anything I can do for this little guy, please let me know. I'm not sure there is, but if there are any suggestions: they will be greatly appreciated!
