I have a sapphire gem that just started laying July 30th. First egg was to be expected, thinner shelled and small. She then went on to lay every other day for a week. Small beautiful, hard shelled eggs. She took off a couple days then started laying again. Beautiful, hard shelled eggs. This Saturday evening, she looked down, not herself. Tail tucked, no interest in free ranging. I gave her nutri-drench and the next morning she laid a soft shelled egg off a roost in the run. She was acting normal after that. Yesterday she laid a perfect LARGE hard shelled egg. Well this morning, she was acting weird again so I went to get more nurti-drench and when I went in the run to give it to her, I noticed she had laid a soft shelled egg off the roost again. Gave her the vitamins, left the run, turned to look at her and watched her drop ANOTHER egg! Very thin shelled. All the girls are on Kalmbach 20% Flock Maker with a side of oyster shells that she helps herself to all day. What can I do for her!? My first set of girls a few years ago only laid one soft shell egg then were totally normal after. I’m just hoping she’s ok.

She’s a new layer. I’ve also seen two deformed (soft-shell, etc.) eggs in one day. Her egg-producing system hasn’t got the hang of things first, and so two were released into her system, one soon after the other, and both went through too quickly to get shell deposited. (It could be something more problematic, but with a new layer, this is the greater probability.)

Be sure that she has plenty of calcium supplements (oyster shell and egg shell) available, which you have done. If she lays another, you can give her a human calcium tablet, 500-600 mg, in case she’s depleted her calcium reserves. You can either poke it down her throat whole or crush and mix it into something yummy, like a small can of canned cat food or a little bit of ground beef.

Thank you so much! I was searching other posts for the amount of calcium to give her, should I need to, but couldn’t find it. I really hope it’s nothing bad and it’s just her system learning the ropes. Do you think that’s what also causes her to act different?

I’ve no idea, although I can imagine that if she feels several eggs moving through, but doesn’t sense the shells, that might make her feel off. (The equivalent of cramps, maybe?)

Do keep an eye on her, though.

You’re probably right! I’m a helicopter mom with my birds so I’ll definitely be watching her like a hawk lol
