2 surprises

I hatched some eggs almost 3 weeks ago and found 2 unexpected chicks in my incubator at hatch. Both of these were black with yellowish/white bellies and wing tips. Any ideas what they may be?

I have 2 sources that these could have been from. I THOUGHT that these were RIR/BO roo with RIR or BO hens. Then I found out there is a Barred Rock in the pen.

The other option is these were of unknown parentage from another breeder.

What were you expecting them to be? They could be mixes.

I thought BO/RIR crosses but they looked NOTHING like the others that were from that breeder.

Ok IF I remember it right this time around

a barred hen and a red rooster would make sex links and the rooster offspring from this cross would have a dot on the head and the feathers would come off barred. But I might be mixing it up again........Walkingonsunshine will be by to correct me along with a few others ...if I am wrong.

They didn't have dots on the head at all but the feathers have that odd coloring/pattern. That's why I was wondering what they could be. lol

You're right!!

When the OP said there is a barred rock in the pen, I'm guessing it was a hen. The most logical thing is these chicks are black sex link pullets.

I agree, they look like they could be Black Sex-Links.

So since these didn't have any white feathering on the top of their heads, they'd be females correct? Even with the brown/black striping?
