Hello all. I have nine 2 week old chicks that I gave to a broody hen as day olds to raise. I have them in a large dog crate in the coop. She's been doing a great job with them but today I noticed one of them has an odd looking wing. It looks kind of crusty and swollen on the edge, which felt firm to the touch. Is this a pecking injury that is now infected? This chick seems to be the runt of them. She is smaller than the rest. Any ideas of what it is and what I can do for it? Thanks in advance.

Oh my goodness that is very swollen, that probably hurts poor thing! I would separate for now, so nobody pecks at it any more and so they can have food & water solely to themselves. Others should be able to chime in for what to do, however it does look very swollen, have you ever culled a chick before/know how to do it if needed?

@Wyorp Rock @azygous @Eggcessive Can anyone help please!

It may initially be from injury or picking.

The lump looks like it may be a feather cyst. I'd clean the wounds really well with Chlorhexidine or Povidone Iodine. If you don't have those, use warm soapy water with Dawn dish soap (rinse with clean fresh water). See if the crusts will slough off so you can better access the wounds and swelling.

See if there's any ingrown or infected feather follicles, if so, tease the feather(s) out, rinse/swab with your cleaner/antiseptic. Dry, then apply a little triple antibiotic ointment.

Do you have a poultry vitamin like Poultry Nutri-Drench? If so, give this little one 2-3drop orally twice a day. See that she's drinking well and eating her chick starter.

Observe to see if she's able to keep up with Mama and the others, it's often best to leave them with their flock if at all possible, taking them out to treat and putting them back. If Mama is pecking her or not caring for her, you may need to brood her yourself.

Any lice or mites on her or the others/Mama?

Thank you. I brought her in and soaked her wing with a warm soapy wash cloth for a bit. I didn't notice any ingrown feathers. I can't seem to slough off any of the hard crust. It looks like a good chunk of the underside of her wing has this crusty scab on it. The skin on her body underneath her wing also had some scabbing as well. I applied some neosporin to the wing and put her back in with the rest. Also checked her and mom for lice and mites and found nothing.

I don't have any nutri drench. Only thing I have is some Sav a Chick packets but they are probably expired. They've been in my chicken kit for awhile.
