Ok so we just picked up 3 of our Silkie chicks (SOOOOO CUTE!!!) yesterday getting the other 2 tomorrow then......on the 15th and 17th we are going to get the rest of our chicks they are being shipped to us and are one day olds mixed (examples Brahmas, Easter Eggers, Australorp etc.... We will have a total of 16!!! So because I am totally new at the chicken thing I want advice to make sure all T's are crossed and I's are dotted. ;o) First question is when the 2nd batch gets here to I place all together? Do I put in separate brooder? I wanted them raised together so the others and Silkies get along ( I was told they would if raised up together;) ...Then the BIG question when they get bigger like 3 weeks old what the heck do I do with 16 bigger chicks? Does anyone have pics they can share of the grower bins they used for 16 plus chickens? We are building a house on 3 acres (where our chicken coop is) but for now we are still in our track home and so are the chicks. HELP! ;o)

I kept mine separated till they were around 3 wks. Some were about 2 wks older at 1st but it also depends on the size n type. Having several in together and too big of chicks with the little can cause problems. When they get scared and stampede the tiny ones can get trampled over. I think that is how I lost one and he was a runt. My baby bantams are tiny and grow slowly compared too my other breeds so I keep them completely separate from the others. Especially Fry-Pan chicks, they get huge fast and will knock anyone down who gets in their way!

If they are only three days old, I'd wait until they got a little older to mix them and they are less "delicate". Here's a photo of our brooder, currently have 20 chicks in it. We have a removable divider in the middle and a hinged cover on the top. Our younger chicks are on the right, older ones on the left side. We let them be together supervised right now, but we're waiting until this weekend to let them be together for good.

The younger chicks are bigger breeds so that helps.
I'd put them together when the younger ones are 3 or 4 days old, out of the clumsy stage.

Mine go to the coop when they come out of the hatcher.
Here's a couple options.

Give lots of space and problems will be few.

LOVE the photos really helping!!! Thanks so much!!! I was thinking we would move them into the coop after 4 weeks of age with heat but our coop is 10 x 10. Like the idea of sectioning an area off! I love this site so helpful. Thanks guys!!!:o) More idea pics are welcome for inside of coop too! We are currently building ours and love ideas!
