2 week old gosling bald spot on back

My gosling is almost 2 weeks old and he has a bald spot on his back right below his wings (in between) he is the only one and housed alone. I feed him nonmedicated chick starter as thats all we can find here, and brewers yeast mixed with his food. He also goes outside 3 times a day and munches on grass. Can anyone give me some insight on this?

It is most likely normal. The food you have isn't the best so that could result in poor feathering out. It is just because he/she is molting. THe feathers or fluff down lay down naturally.

It looks more like a wet or greasy/sticky spot. Maybe you or someone else handled him with a bit of lotion residue on your hand, or maybe a little drop of something sticky spilled on him. It doesn't look at all alarming.

You can give him a shallow container to bathe in, as long as you make sure he gets to dry off completely right after his bath.

As he gets to forage every day, I wouldn't worry about his food. The brewer's yeast should suffice for niacin. Here in Denmark unmedicated waterfowl starter is almost impossible to find, and we still raise thousands of geese every year.

Hi Batormama. I agree with goosegirl. It´s just got something on its fluff. And be careful not to overdo the Brewers Yeast. It´s a tiny bird, I only give it to mine every 3 days, as they´re on grass, or more often if I think they actually need it (for example, one is having difficulty keeping up with the rest).. Enjoy your goz!

p.s. I also feed mine non-medicated chick crumb, that´s all I can get, but they only get a bit twice a day when small. Otherwise they´re chomping on greens, and Romaine lettuce is extremely good for niacin,.

Thats not a bald spot the babies just wet on the back and its easy to see this in brown goslings

I agree, he is just wet. I had the same thing this year. Three little guys all in the same brooder and for some reason two were nibbling at the little guy's back - not pulling or anything, just nibbling and slobbering all over him. They eventually stopped and it went away.

Haha last year my babies nibbeled at it too!
And they where also pulling! It annoyed me because they got dirty this way and they never stopped until they grew their feathers! Some times it annoyed me soo much that some got time outs in a loner box next to their box so they would stop and sometimes i had 4 loner boxes because if two were in one loner box they would nibble eachother ! Bold yoks!

Thanks everyone for your responses, I think he was just itching it as he wouldn't leave it alone today, poor guy is itchy! I had read that they cannot overdose on brewers yeast, is this not true? Now, im worried I have given him too much!

It is possible to overdose on some of the things in Brewers´ Yeast, so I´d keep it minimal. Give it a break for a few days, then just feed it every few days after that, just a bit. If you´re feeding plenty of greens you may not even need it at all. so, just have it as a top-up. If it´s itchy, have you let it have a bath? They just love it. You can always dry it off well afterwards and put it under a heat-lamp so it doesn´t get chilled. Does your gozzie not have a little friend then?
