My daughter’s elementary school class got baby chicks and we volunteered to take a few once they outgrew the classroom. But the breed of this one is throwing us for a loop, and naturally it got lost in translation from teacher to daughter to us.

I’m guessing she is 2-3 weeks old. Supposedly she is female, according to the teacher. She was purchased at a feed store so I’m guessing it’s a common breed. Single comb, clean legs, 4 toes. Feet are orange but legs look darker further up. Her feathers are growing in half white and half a brownish kind of grey. The color looks more brown than grey in sunlight. She’s got pretty distinct markings on the face, with very pronounced eyeliner, especially under the eyes.

She's beautiful! And, having played mystery chick ID/which birds are the parents....I'm coming up blank.

FWIW, my feed store gets in hatchery rare breed assortments sometimes, so don't rule those out entirely.

What this little one is NOT....

Wyandotte
French Marans
Chantecler
Polish
Buckeye
Silkie
Dominique
Orpington
Sussex
Cochin
Brahma
Australorp
Cream Legbar
Phoenix
Hamburg
Appenzeller Spitzhauben
Russian Orloff
Ameraucana (not same as the myriad EE sorts, those are on the table as non-bearded options exist)
Cornish
Faverolle
Houdan
Sultan
Dorking

Each of the above breeds has a trait (or multiple) that this chick doesn't have (for all color varieties of the breeds)

I'm just going to get all crazy and say Chocolate Orpington
Ooh you might be on to something here. I swear I looked at so many identification pictures of day old chicks and couldn’t find a match, but this looks like it could be her twin.

I hope you’re right, I love adding Orpingtons to my flock.
