2 week old RI red - severely inflamed vent

Hi all,

First time posting here. We have 11 baby girls in our brooder at just about 2 weeks old. I noticed that one of the girls was straining to poop and the vent was severely inflamed. (See pics below).

I was able to run her behind under warm water and very gently massage her vent until the tremendous poop worked it’s way out of her. Make that 3 poops. She’s acting fine now but I have her separated from the others in a separate brooder to avoid pecking.

This is my first time raising a flock but I am a seasoned human RN so I’m a bit more comfortable with icky tasks than most. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to keep these girls comfortable and healthy.

Is there anything I should be putting on it or giving to her? Thank you in advance!

What temperature is your brooder, what exactly do you feed and what bedding is in the brooder?

Around 85-90 under the Brinsea. Manna Pro Medicated Starter/Grower and we just switched over to low residue pine shavings two days ago. Prior to that it was layered paper towels to control the mess and keep everything dry.

I had a particular chicken (fayumi) this year that really had pasty butt bad. Really no idea why, the others were fine. I had to help her poop by cleaning her under the warm water multiple times a day for a while until she cleared up. I gave her cooked egg (scrambled duck egg cooked in avocado oil) and that helped and I also put petroleum jelly on her vent. She's fine now and no more straining. She also got inflamed but it's all good now. Maybe those things will help your girl.
