I have a 2 week old chick whose crop is swollen and has whitish sour smelling poo. They are on a normal day/night cycle with an MHP. All the other chicks crops are empty. Could she have an impacted crop? If so how do I treat it? She’s very calm and isn’t moving much which is unlike her and she has labored breathing. Thank you for your help.

Do you have vet care?

Can you post photos of the poop?
Is her crop empty first thing in the morning before she eats/drinks?

Sounds like she may have a impacted and/or sour crop. Give her some coconut oil and massage the crop. (refrigerate the oil, break it up into chunks, see if she will eat it before you ever attempt to syringe oil)
Is she drinking at all? She needs fluids.

Labored breathing is not good. If you don't have vet care, I would also treat for Coccidiosis - it won't hurt her. Get some Corid at you feed store - it's in the cattle section at TSC. Dose is 1 1/2 teaspoons Corid powder or 2 teaspoons of 9.6% Corid liquid per gallon of water.
Give for 5-7 days - make sure this is the ONLY water available during that time period. Mix a fresh batch at least once a day.

Look forward to your photos and more information.

Unfortunately she passed. Her crop was not empty this morning and her poo was off-white and runny. I suspected an impacted crop and had been massaging it every half hour or so. She just passed the last 10-15 minutes. I will remember the coconut oil and pick up corid for my chick-aid kit. Thank you for your response and care.

I have just finished treating a hen who had what initially seemed to be an impacted crop.
The underlying problem was in fact coccidiosis. Three days of Coccivex treatment administered by syringe and further massage and she is much better.

I'm sorry for your loss :hugs

Do you provide grit (crushed granite) for your chicks? If you don't, I would recommend that you do.
A lot of times crop issues are a symptom of something else going on. If you want to investigate the white poop and impacted crop, refrigerate the body and send it to your state lab for necropsy, this will give you some answers.
