Doesn't look good. Belly is swollen.
Thank you so much!you need to go to the forum on chicken diseases/ailments/cures. I will look it up for you,
that little one needs help!
I am using a heat source from a regular light bulb. All seem to be warm enough, and sleep in a group. I have taken the paper towel away and stir the shavings often to keep the poop down, and yes, they are scratching and having a ball!!!Ok what are you doing for heat? Are they able to get away for the heat if they're too warm? Over heating causes some poo issues. They do a "soft" cecal poo now & then, that's the really stinky one. It could be the chick was just having a "bad" day. 20% is good. You can also stop with the paper towels if you wish, they're "old enough" to deal with the shavings but they will get it everywhere (feed & water).

Not that I'm aware of. Just noticed this about 5 days ago. Thanks for references.Doesn't look good. Belly is swollen.
Could be infection started at umbilicus.
Has it always had trouble pooping?

Might be able have solutions.
Guessing the irritation and swelling could have started at hatch. Not that I'm aware of. Just noticed this about 5 days ago. Thanks for references.
I ordered them from a hatchery in Texas. They were shipped on Wednesday and I did not receive them until Friday AM. So far I haven't lost any of this breed. Thank you for the info on what I need to do in the future. I will certainly do that.Guessing the irritation and swelling could have started at hatch.
Checking butts and umbilicus site from day one is a good thing to do.
Did you hatch these or buy them?
I have him in isolation now. Will try the vaseline. Thank you so much.Pasty butt is usually the result of dehydration and temps in the brooder being too high. Even though you have supplied a water source this chick may not be keeping hydrated.
I find that most chicks reared in a brooder, as apposed to under a hen , need to be shown the water. Holding the chicks bottom under warm running water and loosening the poop is better than pulling at dried poop as it will do tissue damage. Prep H may be a little harsh so it might be worthwhile to dab a little witchazel ( astringent ) on the vent and then cover with Vaseline to prevent the poop from sticking . The fact that the area is enlarged also makes it a target for siblings to peck at , so be mindful that you may at some stage need to isolate this chick.
