20% laying pellets vs scratch

Several brands make a 20-21% layer (Agway is one) and I've heard of others, though I can't get them here. Purina does make a gamebird Layena that is 20%, but my feed store doesn't carry it regularly. It is true that there are other things in the feed to worry about besides protein, but eating high quality grains is not a problem. Feeds that say you can feed 50-50 scratch and feed usually figure 10% scratch mix that brings the protein to 16%, the supposed optimum. I rarely feed corn & like to feed field peas etc., with wheat, BOSS and other grains. I want to get my protein at 18% or better. It is frustrating that most feeds are 16%, because if you want to feed greens (which do not make fat) you are still watering down the protein too much.
