I have 8, 20 week old Barred Rocks. I was thinking they must be getting pretty close to laying age. Does anyone know at what approx age this breed starts laying? Is it time to start putting out optional calcium? I just noticed they have been eating the egg shells from our compost heap.

It took until around 26 weeks for my barred rocks to lay. They are a great breed, very friendly, they are my favorite hens

My single BR pullet is big and handsome, squatting whenever we approach her. I'm pretty sure she is laying. Our egg count is slowly increasing as I suspect the spring chicks are beginning to lay. I need a day to just sit in the pen and observe! I'd like to know which of my older hens are still producing well and which of the youngsters are coming on. ~G

Thank you! It looks like I have a couple more weeks to wait. I do love my barred rocks, they are so much more personable than my NH Reds.
