I know someone who all most lost their leg to infection from a rooster attack. Nasty little buggers for sure. I wouldn't be pissed at all for my mom defending herself but for a mom to injure him that badly and then cover him with a branch and just leave him there essentially to die without even letting her daughter know is completely barbaric!
Absolutely agreed. Ethical farming means humane handling.

i gave him more water but he wasn’t interested in drinking and aspirated some on it. i tried pushing it back in but he’s still straining and it just comes back out. put preparation h on it and put him in his basket. i can’t stay up any longer because i have class in the morning. might have to look into giving him fluids through IV

Can we please be kind to mom? People are sounding very judgmental and harsh towards her. We do not know HER story. We do not know how she feels about the whole situation, she could feel awful about it all and know she hit him a bit hard. OP already stated she has had a fear of roosters and may have panicked, covering him with branches may have been all she could bring herself to do. She may have figured he was a lost cause and going to die immediately but couldn’t bring herself to ”finish him”. She may not see chickens as pets like many of us here. She may be a reluctant participant to farming. She may have figured whatever OP was doing was more important than the chicken and didn’t think it was worth the phone call, or didn’t want to upset OP via phone..... basically what I’m saying is people see things differently and without all the information from all parties please be nice. Sorry, rant over.

Do you have any electrolytes you could add to his water? Or even honey or molasses? That would help as well to restore some balance back into his system. Scrambled or boiled eggs are something else I’ve read is good for sick, injured or weak chickens.
he’s been getting electrolytes in his water. his food has even had water in it. i thought he was getting enough water but it doesn’t seem like that’s the case

she’s not a good person

she’s not a good person

This makes me even more angry for you! Why was she even there? Did she do it purposeful because she didn't like him and not because he was actually attacking?!?! Was she there to do something for the chickens?!? If you are in Northern Indiana and have a chicken emergency I would totally tend for you so you don't have to ask her to come around again!

It would be more logical and way less invasive to give fluids via tubing.

Now let us not jump to unnecessary conclusions, she probably was defending herself and she could be an elderly woman.
Is the life of one bird more important than that of our human kin.
