2009 Quilt block of the month - February

Thanks for the info seminolewind. I just need something basic for now. My mom has a very old singer but the tension on it is way off.I wonder if that would be easy to fix. I just don't want to mess with the MIL's pricey machine and accidently break something on it.

Tension is a touchy subject, LOL. The older machines are not as good at keeping the tension as newer ones. When I had my White, it said automatic tension, and it was pretty close. And I always test on a scrap of material before sewing something important.

I sew on a 1973 model Wards Signature which was not top of the line available then, but close. Has eleven decorative stitches, a built in buttonholer and a double-needle feature. It has served me very well. I bought a serger a few years ago, but have not used it much at all.
pbjmaker, the Singer may just need to be serviced and adjusted for it to work well. Agree with Seminole that the tension has to be checked on the older machines before beginning a project. And maybe during the project. But it's usually not too difficult to get set.
Now, one of the nice embroidery machines would be really great to have. I've been eyeing a few models. And a long arm quilter would be super. (But I'd have to have another room built on the house for that!) LOL

I love my machine I have, it is a viking. Bought it over 10 years ago when it was on sale. He sold it to me for under $200. After I bought it he got to telling me about it and found out he sold me the wrong one. So long story short I got a $1500 machine for under $200. I told him I would take the other one and he said nope, I sold it to you for that price and that is what you are paying. It is giving me fits but I have never had it serviced and it really needs to be cleaned, I will have to take it in but he takes over a month to clean them and I don't want to be without it for that long. Maybe I will just get one of those $100 ones till I decide what to buy, I don't want to rush my purchase of my expensive machine either.

I think I would like an embrodiery machine as then I could do names and stuff on the aprons I make for kids. I can also make gifts for the dog kennels I keep in contact with. But man I am not happy with the price at all. They do got some good deals going now as they are bringing in the new models.

The long arm I am looking at is new from viking and is $2500 not bad has an 18 in throat and is an industral strengh machine that you can take off the frame and use by itself. I think that is a must, only trouble is that it would have to go to my sisters to set up and I don't want that I would never get it back, and I am not kidding.

Nice blocks guys and gals, I think I will buy a $100 one from vikings or walmarts today till I decide what I am going to do. That way I can do something other than a 9 patch.

The tension is always a fun one to try and perfect. I have an old singer that is from the 70's. I can try and help you with the tension. There are several places to adjust on mine. One for bobbin and top for top thread. Just pm if i can help

Nah, grab the pixie, make sure you set up all the fabric and machine where it's right in his way of the tv. Do all of the sewing while he's trying to pay attention. Gripe and cuss out the machine. Finally, he will look at you, and say... If you do that in another room, I will buy you a good one.
Works everytime... hehehe
