Those cones are embroidery type and can also be used in a surger machine. I watched a Sewing With Nancy episode today which showed how to make crochet embellishments with a surger, now I just have to get one of those machines!

If you save your empty large spools you can wind the thread onto them from the larger ones using an adapter on your bobbin winder, if your machine has one. Or if you have one of those Sidewinders that they sell at WalMart you can use that to make your own spools of thread.

Also, if you keep a baggy by your machine, put all those loose little threads that you cut off the end when you are trimming your piece in the baggy. Then when you need to stuff something, you have it there handy. This is especially handy when doing applique work and you don't have any batting handy, use them for stuffing.
