2010 Gold Laced Orpington Project (and my first SPLASH)

Well done Dawn - nice healthy chicks. What did you use to start with - a wyandotte gold laced perhaps with a black Orp? Or my other guess would be a gold laced Cochin x black or buff Orp?

How exciting! I love all of the different Orpington projects that everyone is working on.

I can only imagine how stunning these birds are going to be.

PaintedPoultry... it's been a long road of opinions and trials and errors... at first I wanted to start with the barnevelderXblack orp but at the time the opinions I got were to go with buff orpington & wyandotte... then some months later the suggestion again that black orp would be better with wyandottes, then some months later a new idea that all the genes are already in some orpingtons and proper selection could get you there so no laced varieties were needed... well...

I was already started with buff & wyandottes and tried to back peddle a bit but the hens were NOT having it so I have to go forward with what I have now. It may take me longer but the truth is, I won't notice because there is no guarantee the other way either... the truth is ALL of this is speculation for the most part because no one kept proper records from the originals or is unable or unwilling to share.

So... I have a combination of 3 breeding trios including a rooster who isn't even mixed with GLW he's just BuffXBlue orpington.... it's all detailed on my website for anyone with more than an hour to kill reading I'd guess

. It actually works for me because that is the only place I'm keeping track of everything, so those are my notes..

Danielle.. that was totally funny, I laughed outloud! I'm a sucker for that Aussie accent too, I guess I know how she feels LOL!

joletabey & urbanfarmboi thank you so much!! I can't wait to publish updates as the rest of the clutches hatch over the next few weeks and as everyone grows. I don't expect any of these kids to show much of a pattern as adults.. but THEIR children... I'm expecting good things from THEM!

Just curious what criteria are you using to cull at hatch ?

You refer to splash chicks, but do not see blue in your breeders ?

If it looks chipmunk-y or is dark down it can stay

they just happened to hatch at the same time as my GLO project. Those that have been following along know I've been trying for splash chicks for over a year now and I was just so proud I had to boast.

OK I think I've got it, the splash chicks are not part of your gold laced project then.

I'm don't believe I have heard of your project till now, so I'm a little behind the curve.

Have you tapped into the wealth of breeding knowledge on sites like The Classroom At The Coop ? I know it helped me tremendously as I also learned as I went, working on my projects.

Good luck
