The Mayan calendar was originally a Mayan elementary school project to teach them to count to infinity. They eventually just graduated and the next class figured out it was stupid, and they couldn't find another big round rock anyway, so they just let it stay in the temple trophy case as a reminder that counting to infinity is a waste of precious lifespan and round rocks.

The world didn't end with Halley's comet or Hale Bopp, It sure didn't end at 2000 (my works computer did fail though, lol)
History is filled with a LOT more failed end of the world predictions.
2012= just another year.
Mayans could have made 1 year calendars like we do now, but I don't think they were wasteful like society today.
 
it looks to me like it kina ended for the dinosaurs at some point it could end the same for us at some point. usually when you think there is no way for something to happen you get humbled. LOL

It actually took millions of years for the dinosaurs to go extinct. Not dinos one day and no dinos the next. They also became extinct in different parts of the world at different times. 'Course the continents and oceans were distributed differently over the Earth's surface then, too.

I have always found the extinction of the Earth's mammalian megafauna more interesting and it is in the geologically recent past. Probably we could learn a lot more about possible sweeping extinction scenarios from studying that than we could from studying the dino extinction so many hundreds of millions of years ago.

Of course, we also might be able to learn a lot about the current alarming extinction of amphibian species across the globe and apply it to ourselves, also. We are probably slowly poisoning the Earth, and ourselves, to death.

We will probably do ourselves in long before any natural cataclysm has the chance to do it for us.

And we only use one year calendars.
