2012 ... hype or possibility? NOT A DOOMSDAY RANT!

i agree

*nods* were looking into a small 90 acre farm, has accessable water on site and a whole plethora of other attributes that make it a very desireable place to spend eternity and I could TOTALLY build a moat... you shouldn't put things like that in my head! **wanders off muttering about how big a sump pump would be needed... can it be solar powered... oh the possibilities....**

I think that for many people this "threat" isn't about Mayan mysticism or anything religious at all. The promoters of this catastrophe have zero'ed in on the otherwordly as to the source of this knowledge. Faced by everything the Mayans were able to "predict" with stoneage/bronzeage technology, it's reasonable to surmise that they couldn't have done it..... not without help. So petroglyphs are spaceships and respirator wearing spacemen. Knowledge of what is to come came from them and their vastly superior technology.

What's true? It's impossible to tell. Be a naysayer, be on board. In the end it won't matter.

As to those that are prepared. Good for you. You never know when there will be a natural catastrophe or man made that you will need those provisions for. We all should be so prepared.

As for those pointing to the government for our upcoming downfall. You may be right. Many similarities of this "regime" in the US and other, past European, debacles exist.

But again. It boils down to belief. In this entire thread the Bible was mentioned once that I saw. People are scared to say anything about it here because religion is supposed to be kept out. To the unbeliever, the Mayan's knowledge and the Bible should hold about equal weight. One says the end is near, the other says no man can predict the time of the end. What do you believe? Was it aliens? Is it all farce? Were the Mayans really that technologically advanced and kept such good records that they could predict centuries of celestial events?

You have to take what the Mayans and Aztecs had to say and all of their technological advancements with a grain of salt in my opinion. They did many extraordinary things in some regards but I dont believe any of it had to do with "aliens". That is selling them short, they were a very advanced, intellgent society that placed great emphasis on education.
Should we believe in all that they did? Or are many just picking little snipets of what they believed in to serve their own agendas of how they believe this dispensation is coming to an end?

If we are going to subscribe to Mayan/Aztec beliefs then do we need to start having the festivals they had and worshipping the gods they did? For the spring time festival of fertility of the soil are we going to flay peoples skin from their bodies and wear it around for a month to placate the god Xipe Totec? Are we going to sacrifice children and make them suffer so they cry more because of the belief their tears pleased the rain god Tlaloc?

I dont think so. I am sorry to post such extreme instances of their brutality but I do so only as an example of what people choose to take in as their belief in a religion or a society.
It seems so many in our world today want to search for some extraordinary answer to questions that are complex. It is easier to say something is a conspiracy by our government or whoever, rather than to accept the reality of what it truly might be.

I apologize for the soap box. I teach high schoolers who always want to tell me about the newest conspiracy of this or that. Because of the ease of misinformation available on the internet many have very misguided thoughts about things that have happened in the past. The sad fact is the truth of "known" history is much more shocking than any conspiracy theory or far fetched idea that has been put forth.
Ex: Did you know the US government developed a nuclear powered missile in the late 1950s. Yes thats right a missile powered by a nuclear reactor. It could fly indefinetely at low levels to spew nuclear waste over the countryside of our enemies. At some point someone finally saw the "flaw" in this design. If it could fly forever then it could continually fly over the entire world spreading nuclear radiation where ever it went. This was a known project called Pluto.

Ex: From the start of the Columbian exchange it is a conservative estimate that upwards of 10 million native americans from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean died from diseases brought by the Spanish to the New World.

Ex: Joseph Stalin, leader of the USSR for almost 30 years put to death as many as 30-40 million of his own people during his reign.
To me, knowledge like this and the countless other facts of history have a much greater impact upon my thought processes than the countless what ifs of speculation.
Have a great day!

The Mayan calendar is the most highly accurate calendar that has ever been found

My theory-

Is the world gonna end like a lightswitch being turned off on Dec 21, 2012 . . . no.

But, I believe that some significant thing will happen that marks the "beginning of the end" on that day.

Look at where this planet was and is headed in terms of environment and societies, human beings are the worst plague this planet has ever seen.
Technology has allowed us to destroy this planet at an alarming rate, weve probably done more damage in the last 100-200 years since we really started raping the earth by burning coal and oil than has been done in the rest of history.
We have been around for only the blink of an eye compared to the Universe, and look what weve done to our home.

Heres somethings to think about . . .
The oil spill in the gulf- so much oil has come out of the middle of the earth, is there just unstable empty space left? What is filling that void, there is unexplainable amounts of pressure pressing down on all that . . .
Just throw that around till you start to lose sleep over it . . .

"They" say that as little as 5 good sunburns causes skin cancer these days, what about 10 years from now(if we make it)?
Im 33, and when I was a kid I could be outside with no shirt on all day every day and turn a nice tan brown, now I turn bright red and burn even with good sunblock on.
Could it be my skin changing as I age . . . maybe

Religious beliefs play no part in the science of history or present or future.
And I dont even want to get into a discussion about societies and wars and the numbers of people in the world today.
There is no check in population, why do we need to each bring 2-5 more kids into the world???
Isnt there enough of us?

Humans Will destroy this planet . . .

Your beliefs play no part in the science, yada yada...

But, look to astrophysicists. Those that study the creation of our universe. Many of them hold to religion to explain the big bang, because of faith and the fact that science cannot explain it.

Name and provide proof of any credible scientist that believes that . . .

I didnt belittle anybodies beliefs, so Id appreciate you giving me the same courtesy . . .

Sweetie, you just have a knack.

This statement would be as innacurate as the calendar it speaks of.

Evidently you might want to go and read up on your geophysics a little bit and how and where oil and natural gas are harvested from within the earths crust. There are not giant pools of oil just waiting to be syphoned off when we drill a well. There are certain types of rocks that are porous, these rocks contain the oil within their structure. Usually their a type of harder rock above this porous rock that allows the oil collect under pressure. When a drill goes thru the harder rock into the porous oil filled rock the pressure built up will then push the oil to the surface. The oil is removed but the rock it was contained it..........remains. So there are not giant cavities in the earths crust where oil has been removed. Now coal on the other hand is an entirely different subject...........
Not trying to be the person saying anyone is wrong in their beliefs, just trying to share knowledge of scientific facts we do know.
