Ehh, I think the creator of that pyramid either ran out of stone, got tired, arthritis, or died, I really don't think there is anything symbolic about that year, maybe the calender just starts over.

The mayans had a cycle that had so many years in each cycle. The number 13 was symbolic or sacred for something. 2012 is the end of the 13th cycle.

A former coworker of mine was married to a archeology professor who specialized mayan culture (her PhD was specifically in mayan archeology). Per my coworker, his wife says it is a bunch of bologna.

I'm liking it to the Y2K scare in 1999/2000 and the alien invasion for Jan. 1, 2001.
