2014 breeding season begins, post your results

still no internet, so posting from phone. Day 27, three hatched, five external pips and many more internal. My five eggs from DylansMom all show signs of life!

That's fantastic Kathy! I hope you get your net back soon. We have had a rough 2 day hatch here but as of now 7 are in the brooder and one is still in the hatcher trying to gain some strength before joining the others. He was another slightly malpositioned one that pipped straight thru missing the air cell completely, I had to assist him after 36 hours with no progress and he is like a limp noodle, but he's either a pied or a silver pied. If the eggs from me hatch this is what you may get.

Congrats on the chicks and fingers crossed for Noodle. Anyone ever noticed raw spots on necks, backs and wings of newly hatched chicks?

Are you referring to the spots on my chicks' heads and backs? If so, those are actually tan spots of chick fuzz

indicative of the silver pied. I do have 1 white chick with a bald spot, I'm calling him Kojak for the time being.

No, I'm talking raw spots, like pressure sores.

What causes the bold spot, does anyone know? I have one that has it too also a white

My understanding is that the chick got a little stuck to the inner membrane at that spot and it prevented them from developing normal feathering. I've had them before on occasion, and the good thing is they stay the same size as the bird grows, so by the time they are adults the bald spot is so small you barely notice it unless you are really looking for it.
