2014 breeding season begins, post your results

Forgot to say, have two due to hatch 5-19. They're under a Buff Japanese hen, she's the best broody ever! Of the eight I put under the big turkey mama, three were not fertile since the hen was with young boys, one had a blood ring and the other four look like they're viable.

Congrats Kathy! I know we've talked about my big old white turkey before, over the years she has laid an egg here and there every season, but never many and never regularly. This breeding season is so weird my 9 year-old Turkey has laid a beautiful clutch of 7 perfect eggs and is now trying to set them( at least for part of the time anyway). If she looked like she was serious about this I would give her some pea eggs instead, as we have no Tom turkeys here, unless a wild one paid her a visit when we weren't looking.

Well I set my first eggs this evening. 9 of my own which were getting old and 6 that were shipped to me. I am afraid the shipped eggs may have taken a lot of abuse, I could see detached air cells in 4 of the 6 and the others were too difficult to see thru the shell so I couldn't tell how those were. The outer box was really banged and scraped up.... shameful for an express package and I am going to let my PO ladies know about it. I am going to treat these as I did the shipped chicken eggs I hatched recently. They are sitting point down in the bator and will remain in that position for the first week, tipping left then right instead of on their side and being turned. We'll see if it helps at all with the air cells. Cross your fingers for them!

I received some shipped eggs today. They were packed well l, undamaged, but when I candled tonight I did not see an air cell! The yoke looks intact. Why can't I see the air cell?

I collected eggs for the last 3 days and i checked and none of them have an air cell yet, you will be fine, stick em in the bator and sit on your hands

I have been worried about this recently...I am getting an egg that will come in hopefully tomorrow and the last (it was also the first) time I got peafowl eggs shipped to me most of them had detached air cells. I didn't even know that is what it is called until I read your post, but that is what happened to me. The strange thing though was for me the box was in perfect condition and the eggs were packed very well in packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and taped inside Styrofoam cups yet I guess they still got shaken up. My mom even thinks maybe they froze...

I need people to keep their fingers crossed or pray for me too the egg I am getting is from DM Farm's Burmese peahen. Doug was really nice to send it to me I just hope the people handling it won't be rough with it.

Air cells are very hard to see in unincubated eggs. Especially Pea eggs which have thick shells and can be speckled looking when candled. On my fresh eggs it actually looks like a small dark circle at the wide end of the egg. In mine it does not move when I turn the egg at different angles. On the shipped ones it is moving all over the place.

The first picture is one of my eggs, the dark circle stays put at the wide end, the second picture shows the shipped egg and the dark spot moves around as you turn the egg, just like the bubble in a carpenters level.

All fingers are crossed for your egg and mine. An undamaged box with damaged eggs makes me think

shaken

. At least with my banged up box an accident looks like the probable cause, still with what they charged for the express shipping it should not have had an accident at all. I've done a lot of express shipping to and from and this is the worse looking express package I've received. I thought you preferred the more gold look of the Javas over the more blue/green of the Burmese?
