2014 breeding season begins, post your results

Guess what I finally found my guineas nest! I expected it to be out in the woods somewhere. I was looking at my squash where I had added the bedding to I had cleaned out of their house. It was really growing good like past my knees good. And, low and behold I moved one of the leaves and there was a nest! It had 2 eggs in it. I think I'll leave it alone and see how many eggs are laid in it. I've got 4.5 dozen guinea eggs in the incubator now, and 4 peafowlso I'm full up.

Well I candled the mystery Burmese egg just now. It is a mystery because I am still uncertain if it is good or not, but I am still going to keep incubating it.

So it doesn't smell anymore at all and I can't really see veins (it is a hard egg to candle) but I do see the chick and on the duck egg chart It looks to be the size of the photo on day 12 and today is day 13 so that is good. I tried getting a good look at the chick so I kept turning the egg trying to get it centered so I could see it, but it kept moving across the egg so that couldn't see it as well. Not sure if bad eggs move like that or not?

I really hope it is good. Please God let it be good...

Minx, old trick is once your incubator is opened up about 10 minutes,if the egg is good it will be retaining heat,if not it will be significantly cooler than other viable-growing eggs of the same age. I have 3 big trays in my Humidaire bator, each one is almost over capacity full, and when I turn them twice a day,by the time I get to the last shelf it's fairly easy to feel ones that are cooler than others. Naturally this cannot be felt on eggs just a few days after incubating started but eggs 2-3 weeks old you can tell easy enough without candling.

This is true.

I hate this year! Now I lost my oldest hen.

Now I got to go hunting for an older hen and I got to watch these eggs I try to get them to hatch and survive at all cost. At least now I know what problems I can face around here though and I got the things for it to help prevent it.

Very sorry to hear this. Do you think it is the same thing that killed your younger hen, or was she perhaps egg bound again and unable to pass it this time?

Sorry to read that you lost Jadea, last you posted she was getting better, so what do you think the cause of her death was?
After the original Thor died, did you worm all of your birds with the Safeguard (not just the Peafowl), then follow up with a 2nd worming 10 days later? If not, I suggest you deal with that ASAP, because if one bird had a big enough parasite load to kill her most likely all your birds have those same parasites, to some extent. Stress and trauma plus a heavy parasite load can kill birds quickly.

I think if I were you I'd make sure the rest of your birds are 100% healthy before you bring any new birds in... JMO.

sorry you lost her, could have been why the chickens were picking on her, sometimes in the animal kingdom the weak will be run off as there weakness is a threat to the flock or pack, natures way isn't always fair

please try and keep your birds on a worming schedule no matter what , you can worm an animal and the next day they can pick up eggs and start the cycle all over again unless you have them on a daily wormer.
When it has been raining alot here i worm my bird every 2 months unless it is breeding season but i would not hesitate to worm them then also if i felt they needed it as i feel they are way more important than the infertile eggs they lay.
