Egg experiment... We got a Janoel 48 incubator to use as a hatcher, but I'm going to cram it full of pea eggs, many of which are quite old, and see what happens. :D

Keeping the humidity where I want it will be interesting, lol.

I have the Janoel my first 3 hatches were less than spectacular with my guineas! My 4th hatch was the one I had the 4 pea eggs I had a good hatch except for the peas...... I think they were damaged in shipment. I am fixing to hatch more guineas. I went into lack down this morning I see life in every egg. So, I might have a real good hatch. If I do I am going to sell the guineas. 5 of my 3 week old ones are going to Mandy8 she lives about 160 mi from me. So my Janoel is working fine. There was a little bit of a learning curve with it on my part. It seems to be a good incubator.

Eggzactly what DW said to do. I did find a conversation on Old English Game Bird Society forum from 2012 where someone said if you use Clorox or Lysol to be sure to let it air out like you do before putting eggs in. They thought that Ozine or Tec-Trol were the best things to sterilize with, I'm not sure why we didn't use the Tek-Trol to begin with, we use it a lot anyway. I understand that one of the biggest hatchers in my area who hatches tens of thousands of eggs per year, washes all his eggs and coats them with Tek-Trol before setting them to kill any bacteria on the eggs.

Yeah, I think I can take the blame for this one, I can still smell the Lysol in the hatcher and it's been six days.

The duck eggs that were in the hatcher faired a little better and the guineas hatched 100%, but not a pip from the Peas. I am thinking that the guineas hatched two days earlier and have a thicker shell so they were not affected. My learning curve really sucks.

This weeks batch is due to go into the hatcher Saturday for a Monday hatch, (DylansMom has two eggs in that batch), and the eggs that I would have set in the incubator went under three broody FBCs. Tec-Trol is my new best friend.

You know what they say about great minds!

Whatever you use, rinse everything off with hot water afterwards and let air dry. I actually stick everything in my big utility sink and fill with hot water until everything is submerged, then I dump in a generous amount of Clorox and let it soak overnight, the next day I empty the sink and rinse everything good and let air dry for a few days, I never smell any Clorox residue/fumes and I've used the scented and unscented both. I used to work in a personal care home and I am very familiar with universal precautions, I figure if its good for that type situation, it should be good for this one as well. My fingers are crossed for your next batch!

Got the Janoel humidy at 43%, so will try packing it full of eggs on their sides or might be lazy and put just 24 in the turner. :)

FYI, this is really just an experiment as many of these eggs are over 4 weeks old, so I doubt they're any good.

Yikes, you are a brave one. Don't let any blow up in there!

They look okay and I'll toss them if I don't see anything viable by day seven.
