2015 August hatch-a-long!!

That's great are you using an egg turner?? by the way I love your avi!! lol

Yes, I have an egg turner for both. I wouldn't want to hatch without one.

I have experimented with tipping with whole incubator so that I could "overload" the incubator. I only did it twice...more just to see if I could. I learned that if something happened to my egg turner I could tip the incubator while I was waiting on replacement parts to arrive.

Sweet!! lol. how did the hatches go with the overloaded incubators??

Well I'm glad the thread is still active and that so many people have chicks that are also going to hatch in September. Tonight is final candle and lockdown for my two little black oegb eggs. Super excited! Couldn't contain myself last night and took a sneak peek. They had better turn fast I know the have time left to turn but one has its toes right next to the airsac. Hoping since its only two eggs theyll hurry and come out lol. Our shipped SQ Buttercup eggs(the nine that were intact) that came in pretty rough shape got set Sunday. Lots of broken rolling and slightly detached air cells. Trying to hope for the best but expect the worst. Anyway the seller messaged us yesterday our replacement eggs shipped out and he threw in two partridge rock which seems a bit strange lol but no complaints. Hoping the timing will be okay. They took three days to get here last time. I hope the new ones arrive in better shape. If they all arrive intact I will potentially have 19 buttercup eggs and 2 partridge rock eggs in the bator right as the oegb are hatching. I'm not real worried about the higher humidity and not turning for the few days it takes the oegb to hatch effecting the Buttercup eggs as they're quite porous.

Well, if that's the case, I just may beat you to it. I am crossing my fingers that one of my pullets out there will lay an OE. She came from an OE, just beautiful. Waited and waited for her to lay that pretty green egg. What did I get? A really dark egg. It's pretty though, and I had an EE breed with her..not sure about how all of this genetic things works, just hoping that her green genes are in there somewhere..and that this baby that I have from her out there will lay a nice Olive colored egg for me. I still have months to wait though.

Hope you get the right colored egg this time. I read somewhere that not all first generation OE will lay an olive colored egg, not sure how reliable the source was...but your right with all the genetic variations...and I think egg color is a little harder to predict...wow...my hat goes off to the others on BYC that understand the genetics of what is going on. I find it fascinating, but there is so much to learn.

Well I'm done... I have had 6 Silkies successfully hatch out of 10 eggs that went into lockdown.... 2 Miniature Paint Silkies, 1 Bantam Paint Silkie, 2 Blue, 1 Partridge... I went to assist the chick that pipped the wrong end but it had already died... I candled the remaining 3 eggs as I had a bad feeling about them to find very faint veins... like they had died... so I water candled them to double check no movement so eggtopsied them... 2 Paint chicks positioned correctly but died sometime during lockdown... these had very bad aircells from one end of the egg to the other... the third egg was fully formed but malpositioned also.... I will post pics of my fluffies when they're all fluffed up other than that to all those hatching in September see you on the September hatch a long!! :D

x2! I'm just now starting to get the jist of genetics and I have a ton to learn after 2 years. have to say it's a lot of fun though

Suffolk :) I'm in Holtsville. and I'm using the same bator! it works really well if you have it in a room where the temps stay stable. if you can do that you will have great hatches :) I used to have 2 Hovabator Genesis 1588's. I'm thinking about upgrading to a sportsman next spring though

I live in patchogue!! Your not far from me at all. I set the new bator in a room that doesn't have ac but I leave the door open to a room that does. The temp stays around 78 during the day. It is still getting warmer. Right now it's at 90 but the red light is still on. How is your hatch rate with it and where do you get your eggs

I was pleased with the results. My largest hatch I set 93 eggs, with 78 making it to lockdown, and 54 hatching. The eggs were gathered in Feb, and I had several bantams/silkie eggs. Fertility was a problem with most of the eggs that I removed...or lack of fertility I should say.
I have since gone to dry hatches (where I don't add in water to the incubator until lockdown). That has greatly helped the health and ease with which the chicks are able to get out of their shells...no sticky chicks!

I have wanted to try again, but using the dry method...but I keep running out of places to put more chickens as it is....I can not imagine what I would do if I did hatch out that many at one time. I'm really trying to be "good" and not hatch out more than I can handle at a time....but it's so hard.
