2015 breeding season

I am going to leave it in there for 30 days just to be sure. Who knows perhaps it is really tired and isn't moving at the moment, but I highly doubt that.

I have 2 fresh eggs I have been saving for the incubator after this batch so soon I can start all over again.
Dead eggs will cool off faster than live ones.

Aww darn when I took it out I was thinking it sure did feel cool and wasn't very warm like what I am used to eggs being like. I am sure it is dead. I might wait until tomorrow and then start incubating a fresh batch - that is after I clean the incubator.

Are you up to doing an eggtopsy?

-Kathy

I eggtopsy everything!!!!

Kskingbee like your egg that hasn't done anything and all others hatched? I would be checking it out.

First you make a very small pip in the air cell part of the egg, just in case it is still alive.

If blood I stop but I do try to have the hole just big enough to see what's going on, pulse, not able to pip membrane, etc.

I also have been able to save a few this way that couldn't otherwise get out, sometimes malpositioned etc.

You can tell if it's still alive when u see into the shell just enough, if u gently touch the membrane with clean moistened q tip, or I use my moistened finger, just me. ;)

After I assess the chick is actually dead, I open it up.

Kathy will have to tell you from here on as I don't always know what happened but I am still always curious and have a morbid fear of throwing away a living chick.

There shouldn't be any blood at the air sac end of the egg. Use a paper clip or something small and break a small hole maybe about the size of a lead pencil as close to the center of the egg as possible then watch if you see movement of the membrane closest to the peachick. A very high lumen flashlite will also show the peachicks beak and head well enough to see it move if it's alive. This technique also works very well checking to see if the chick has broken thru the air sac or not. At very late stages such as day 24 and up,manytimes if you hold the egg on your ear and gently tap on it with your finger you can hear the peachiock occassionally "cheep" as well. If you break the shell too low, then yes there will be blood.

I did this last year with one that failed to pip. I kept a piece of tape over the end and wetted the membrane with a wet Q-Tip. It finally died on day 32, I opened it up and it was fully developed, but I guess it just wasn't viable. I was looking to see what advice might be given to look for in a chick that died in the shell. Maybe there is a crazy mad scientist out there that has a 'procedure'... (wringing hands brawhawhaw)

Oh, thanks for the info!

Have a bunch of thoughts on how to do it, just need to figure out how to say it, lol. What I do belive to be true is that you don't have much time to get them out once they've absorbed the yolk. Also need to look for pictures, 'cause I think I have some that showed how I assisted a wrong ender.
