** 2017 New Drug Law - What Are Your Plans? **

As a cattlemen by trade and newbie chicken keeper by hobby, I believe ya'll are missing a big part of the changes.  Namely, the antibiotics that are now RX only are the water soluble varieties and varieties considered "medically important" to humans that are fed in animal feed.  In other words, the ones meant to be dissolved in water, or fed to animals in their feed that are also used in humans.  At this time, injectables that were over the counter are still available over the counter.  I believe all the drugs in the picture above are injectable.  


If you have an established relationship with an ag vet getting the drugs you need, even without a visit to their office, shouldn't be an issue.  As to the never used them crowd, there are different ways of doing anything and the beauty of running your own birds is you can handle them as you see fit.  


Things like medicate feed, medicated milk replacer for cattle, etc. should be gone now.  If you want to get medicated feed made at a mill, you would have to have a VFD from a vet.  If you want to buy water soluble antibiotics you need a RX, which pretty much means the only people that will carry them anymore are vets because feed stores aren't set up to verify prescriptions.  


But if you could buy it over the counter injectable before, you still can.  

Please don't include me with the "y'all's", lol, because I think I have a very clear understanding of what was OTC and what now requires a prescription or VFD, and like you said, it's not injectables, it's *almost* all antibiotics that are added to feed, and *almost* all antibiotics that can be mixed in water. I think post #33 says all this, and it also lists what food/water soluble drugs can still purchased OTC (bacitracin is one).

FWIW, I took the picture of the injectables at TSC to show people that they can still get the usual injectables. Not shown is injectable penicillin, that was in their fridge.

I already knew about bacitracin and tiamulin, but was curiuous about the others, so just did a quick search and this is some of what I found.

TG-E is meant for feeder cattle only, not dairy! Heifers will have estrogen on board naturally, so extra synthetic estrogens probably don't matter much. Buy organic instead! I'm not a fan of this stuff either, or of feed lots, but Americans want the cheapest groceries possible, and appear to think that it all grows in packages at the market. (Sorry, ranting again!). Digress away, lol. We think about all water that goes down our drain, or water I pour out into the grass. And what about people that treat entire flocks with medicated feed or water, what sort of impact does their poop have on the environment?

I never really knew exactly what sort of stuff went into poultry, beef, and swine, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. My favorite cut of beef is the tenderloin, and that's usually over $20/pound, so how much would organic tenderloin be?

As a cattlemen by trade and newbie chicken keeper by hobby, I believe ya'll are missing a big part of the changes. Namely, the antibiotics that are now RX only are the water soluble varieties and varieties considered "medically important" to humans that are fed in animal feed. In other words, the ones meant to be dissolved in water, or fed to animals in their feed that are also used in humans. At this time, injectables that were over the counter are still available over the counter. I believe all the drugs in the picture above are injectable.

If you have an established relationship with an ag vet getting the drugs you need, even without a visit to their office, shouldn't be an issue. As to the never used them crowd, there are different ways of doing anything and the beauty of running your own birds is you can handle them as you see fit.

Things like medicate feed, medicated milk replacer for cattle, etc. should be gone now. If you want to get medicated feed made at a mill, you would have to have a VFD from a vet. If you want to buy water soluble antibiotics you need a RX, which pretty much means the only people that will carry them anymore are vets because feed stores aren't set up to verify prescriptions.

But if you could buy it over the counter injectable before, you still can.

I never really knew exactly what sort of stuff went into poultry, beef, and swine, and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

My favorite cut of beef is the tenderloin, and that's usually over $20/pound, so how much would organic tenderloin be?

We don't use store bought meat, so I really don't know what "organic" cuts would cost. I could be wrong (because of that), but I don't think "organic" means that an animal was never, never, ever exposed to antibiotics or supplements when medically necessary. Once again....I may be wrong in my opinion.

For instance...
If one of my "organic" beef calves suffered an injury or illness and was given antibiotics as VALID / NECESSARY medical treatment....I would still consider that beef "organic".
I would NOT, however, consider a beef calf that was raised on medicated feed and/or supplements "organic"

Just as we see information to not eat eggs from treated birds for X amount of time after treatment, there is a time frame for which antibiotics and such move from the animals system and it is "clean" of them. That animal to me would still be organic.

Good animal husbandry does not mean you don't seek medical treatment when necessary, and/or include valuable veterinary maintenance if the best interest of your production is at stake. This would be the case whether we are talking about chickens, beef, swine.....and do on.....
