2018 Newbie Chat!

This is what happens when you sleep late and they didn’t get their morning treats on time...and yes, Angus was crowing

So the leg banding was a complete fiasco :lau

I decided to used children’s rubber hair bands. I read up on leg bands and several people on BYC had said they had success with them.

I didn’t want to use zip ties because I don’t want to risk getting them embedded in their leg.
Well they were easy to put on but the chick wearing it as well as the other chicks all started pecking at them.
I expected that but others had said they lose interest quickly.
I had four birds banded when I realized there was lots of excitement in the run.

I saw a chick with a yellow rubber band in her beak being enthusiastically chased back and forth by a bunch of others!! :barnie:wee:wee

No no no!
I had to go in there a retrieve ALL of the bands because they’d removed all of them.
I was terrified one of them would swallow it!
It was an absolute rodeo in there while I tried to get those bands from them while other chicks were also trying to get them.
I was successful in getting them and leg banding has been suspended until I can find a better ID system. :(
Ugh...

:lau:lau:lau just picturing that made my day. Lol

I plan to use zip ties myself. Loosely fastened.

Yeah I don’t know why I’m so worried about them since I’m very involved with my birds and look them over quite often.
I think I will get some multi colored ones at Bi Mart.

We have a problem with hundreds of sparrows around here all of a sudden.
I had to put my birds food in the coop since these sparrows were eating it.
My husband left the large door open and there was one stuck in there!
I chased it out and shut the big door.

I really hope they don’t learn to use the pop door.
I have read that putting a curtain up makes the wild birds think it’s blocked off.

Love your stories and the way you tell them - so funny

Day 7 on my incubation and out of 20 eggs I have 12 left. 9 I can see life and three Maran mysteries, cause they're too dark to see. Lol

Can you all see what that is? There was much confusion on my Facebook post. One person saw a pancake :idunno
I clearly see an egg being candled on an iPhone. Lol
I saw straight off that it is an egg with a chick in it - can't make it into a pancake no matter what way I look at it!?!?!
