2018 Newbie Chat!

Oh no! I'm so sorry! You lost so many, you must have been devastated! :hugs I can't imagine. :( Did you figure out what the illnesses were? I still have my 4: Pearl, Opal, Jade, and Diamond.
I made scrambled eggs for mine today, giving Diamond her own bowl separate from the others. She's lowest on the pecking order. It's nice to see new feathers where the others had pecked them off on her neck and head. Hopefully they'll stay there. She gobbled down the eggs which made me feel better about her. I also put some vitamins in their water. When she was broody for so long she lost a lot of weight too. I gave her softened food daily. I'd take her out of the coop before the others and put her up on a table with the food. Then put some out for the others on the ground. The others had become very annoyed with her and I think they were chasing her away from the food in the run just compounding the weight loss problem.
Are you sure they pecked Diamonds feathers off?
My broodies will often go through a partial molt after having been broody.
Some weight loss is common but she should bounce back.
I’m glad you still have your four!
I’m sad that I lost some but I needed to downsize anyway.
We really don’t have anyone to care for them when we’re gone so we haven’t been able to go anywhere in two years!
We’ve gotten our yard very safe so we’ll probably take some short trips this year.

She wasn't broody at the time, but could have been recently. I don't remember. She was broody so much! It happened in one day/night. They do peck at her while settling for the night. I have a camera in the coop. But this would have been much more than usual. So maybe from broodiness.
She is bouncing back from the weight loss thank goodness. I gave her some scrambled eggs every so often and put an extra feeder in the run. I also got a small bag of 22% protein show bird feed and mixed it with the regular feed.
I'm lucky that my daughter lives so close and also has chickens. We watch each other's when we're gone somewhere.

I really really wish I had family nearby to watch our birds when we go somewhere!
I never realized what a time commitment chickens could be.
An automatic coop door would help but I’ve heard horror stories of birds getting caught in them and stragglers being shut out.
Out here in southern Idaho, it doesn’t get dark until after 10pm and the sun comes up at 6am.
It’s difficult to ask someone to come by every day, twice a day plus collect eggs.
