2018 Newbie Chat!

It's hotter then heck today. I hate the heat--completely miserable. I put the hose on top of the run over the pool on low so the ducks have a fountain you might say, they are loving it. I put a mister in the chicken run and a fan. It's just yucky out there.

We are going to get another bad heat wave this week. 103 Wednesday and 106 Thursday and Friday :th

My birds hardly move out of the shade when it’s hot.
They spend most of the day laying down resting.
When the sun starts going down the boys get super randy though

The problem I have is that we are still integrating and the small ones are not smart enough to go where there is shade during their escape. Then they get all worked up. I finally put the bigger ones in the coop run, where its pretty much all shade so the smaller ones can find shade easier without getting pecked.

The ducks are in their own world and just having a grand ole time.

There is another unkown that wouldn't accommodate me today, so no picture. They are growing up so fast:love
That second unknown one looks a lot like my gold laced Wyandottes did when they started to feather out. Maybe that’s it!

Love the rainbow flock! Went that way myself with 10 pullets that are about 15 weeks now.

Looks a lot like our gold laced Wyandotte hen/roster? I’m not the best at guessing!

Seams our “pullet” is a rooster now he has matured he is chasing all the hens. Except one! He is picking on her to no end... she is our all white chochen. Found her a bunch of times hiding, been reading up and have her separate for the day roosting with the rest at night. Not going well.

Any thoughts on putting her in with the 10/ 8 week old pulletts?

Working on extra run space maybe a few weeks of locking her down for the day, and mixing them all, hopefully things will work out!

I ordered 30 bantam chicks from Welp, and all came healthy and so far so good. They are 4 days old or so. 10 WCB polish, 5 SL polish, 5 white polish, 5 white silkies, 5 cochin (some are supposed to be frizzles), 3 black, 1 red and 1 white. Pretty sure the extra 1 they threw in is a RIR bantam. I watch them like a hawk, scared for any to have issues. I got the cochins because they were the only frizzles available, and I wanted to make sizzles, but now I'm a HUGE fan of cochins. They are the SWEETEST! My polish are very inquisitive, but not as lovey dovey as the cochins. I love them all though. So far so good, but I'm super paranoid. Trying my hardest to make sure they do well.

I'm pretty sure this is how I'll be when my chicks arrive - staring at them constantly to make sure they're ok!!

I got another baba bawk today from Prince. Same kind of situation, except this time it was one of the older girls. She snuck into the duck area and I had to grab her, she did not want to leave the area and made some noise. He came running to the gate to her rescue. He is definitely all about the girls. I told him to back off and he did. I'm pretty impressed with his loyality to the girls. I'm hoping that he will eventually get that I'm not hurting them. I took one out of the run today and he got really upset and ran back and forth along the fence until she came back in.

Should I keep removing the girls every now and then, so he can learn they are in good hands? Or will that just make him angry? If I'm in there, the girls want to be by me and he has no problem with me handling them, petting them, etc.

I just want to do this right. I like his temperament and want him to stay mellow and not try to kill me.
