2018 Newbie Chat!

I'm really getting attached to this cute little turkey, I've named him Jack. My husband is still calling him Thanksgiving.

He's so friendly. I never imagined I'd want a pet turkey. Lol. Looking forward to watching him grow.

Anyone else have turkeys? Will they need a much larger pop door?

Turkeys can get huge!
My friend has some and they’re just immense.
I think my property is too small for a turkey.
He’s a cute little poult though. :)

My husband is a no go for more birds right now too. We just butchered one last week and I’ve been eyeing penedesenca chicks to add to the flock. Ugh next year is where I’m at too!
Dang husbands! Lol. Wanting chickens was originally his thing but now I love them. We still have Casper in the prefab and he's absolutely gorgeous! I think my husband isn't wanting to cull him anytime soon as he hasn't shown aggression in weeks. I need to go out and get an updated picture soon.

We have wild turkeys around here and they're tall.

Are you guys going to see if Casper will do better with the girls?
Was that even his issue or was he human aggressive?

He was pretty rowdy with the girls but he was pecking at my husband way too much for our liking. He never actually attacked but maybe I will see how he does now that Big Red crossed that line. I would love to breed him with the girls if he's a good ol boy. Our speckled are so pretty and different.

We added two extra roosts to the coop so it’ll be easier for the lower ranking birds to get away from the dominant ones.
The bantams had to use the ladder roost to get up to the rafters where they like to go.
They would have to run the gauntlet with Agatha and Emily and sometimes Silkie pecking them the whole time.
I think this will help a lot.

He may behave different now.
I’ve noticed Angus has gained a lot of confidence since Loki has been gone.
He has been a lot more calm in terms of breeding the girls too. He’s not so frantic about it.
I mean he could still use some maturity but with time I think he’ll turn out pretty good.
I remember an experienced member on here said to me that a rooster should be with his girls and concern himself with them not following the humans around.
Of course, there’s always curiosity about what we’re doing but he shouldn’t be stalking and sneaking like some roos do.

The funny thing about Big Red is he couldn't care less when I'm out with my husband. It's when I'm alone that he has a problem with me. I guess he knows DH is the keeper of the chickens and my time handling them went to basically zero when I had my little. They don't remember all the care I used to give. So I guess when I'm with the chicken keeper I'm ok because he's ok. Seriously when I'm at the fence he walks wherever I do and never takes his eyes off me. When I'm with my husband he goes about his duties with the girls never approaching me.
