We had a great day today.
I did some overdue gardening since the weather has cooled off quite a bit.
This next week is showing highs in the 80s and even a few days in the 70s.
A couple of overnight lows in the upper 40s!
The LF flock decided to follow me in the garden. They love to see what I might stir up.
Silkie stayed nearby too and my little red bantam Cochin, Cricket.
Cricket is probably my favorite bird right now.
She’s just a sweetheart and she’s not that intimidated by the LF and she’s not aggressive herself...just confident and assertive, I’d say.
She likes to come over and hang with the chicks when I let them out in the evening.
She will give a gentle peck if the chicks are too rowdy but nothing mean.
She put the little Australorp cockerel in his place when he stood up to her with raised hackles.
She stays near them and forages in the grass alongside them.
All the other birds pretty much ignore the chicks and move on to what they’re doing.
A few of them (Wyandottes and Emily) have pecked the chicks and the other bantams have also shown the chicks that they’re bigger.
Angus has been just awesome.
He hasn’t pecked a chick or anything.
They seem to have a natural caution of him.
After my gardening I decided to share some sugar snap peas with the birds and my dog, Charlie.
I sat in the lawn chair and opened the pods and tossed the inner peas to the birds and gave some to Charlie.
The did eat the outer part but only if I broke it up for them.
This went on for about 20-30 minutes.
At one point Angus jumped up on my lap but then jumped right back down.
It all came to a screeching halt when Charlie attacked Agatha.
To be fair, she may have pecked him first. I didn’t see. She’s my only bird that does that to him.
She’s fine; he just got a mouthful of feathers.
I should’ve known not to involve the dog in this because he can be food aggressive.
As soon as it happened I looked to see what Angus was doing and he was already leading the others away.
Which is exactly what he should do.
Charlie got scolded and put in the house.
I went back out and shared the rest of the peas with the babies.
