2018 Newbie Chat!

I just got home from work a little while ago.
My DH told me that a dog got Skye our EE pullet today. :th
:hit:hit
Skye and Silver are always jumping over the 4’ chain link fence into our side yard.
We haven’t finished the fence we’re building to contain that area.
They like scratching through the leaves and the compost pile.
My husband said he was going out to check for eggs when he heard the doorbell ring.
A neighbor told him she saw a neighborhood dog with one of our chickens in it’s mouth.
So he went towards this dogs house (across the street and 3rd house down)
and saw the dog laying on the porch but could see no signs of our girl.
There were only 2 or 3 feathers in our yard.
He heard no noise or commotion.
I’m wondering if she may have not been dead and the dog dropped her.
And then she hid somewhere? :fl

This dog is a Brittany Spaniel.
I don’t think the owners ever let it in their house.
It wanders everywhere- pooping and peeing in everyone’s yard. :he
Clearly it’s fed because it’s in good condition.
They don’t have a fenced yard and they’re the only ones in a neighborhood of around 20 houses that lets their dog do this.
It’s possible it’s a hunting dog and since Brittany’s are bird dogs it may have just caught her and carried her with a soft mouth as they are trained.
Unfortunately my birds aren’t afraid of dogs.
This dog is seen by them daily on the other side of the fence.
It doesn’t act or do anything aggressive.
Charlie goes up to the chain link to sniff noses with it.
It’s possible the dog walked right up to Skye and she just stood there. :hit

The WORST part is that as I left for work around 4pm I saw that Skye was over the fence and I didn’t call my husband to tell him.
We’ve had to chase her and Silver (occasionally others) back over the fence several times each day.
I figured he’d see her soon and get her back over...

Seems to be my week for troubles this week :thAfter having rather a stressful start to the week, I decided I'd get a much needed early night but at about 7:30 pm my grandson was violently sick and shortly after my daughter too was violently sick and both continued to be sick throughout the evening so we went to the hospital A&E department - it turns out they have food poisoning from eating a shop bought sandwich. Thankfully both are ok,(they just got to ride it through) and are now tucked up in bed, but for me who hasn't had any sleep, cleaning out sick buckets for most of the night, then sitting at A&E until early hours of the morning has taken it toll and I am shattered, trouble is, it is now 05:25 am so there isn't anytime for me to sleep b'cos the bird need to be let out at 6:30 am! Soooo tired.

I can’t even go look around because it’s dark.
I did look with a flashlight but I saw nothing.
I’m so disturbed!
I have no closure.
I can’t believe I’m not going to see her tomorrow.
I asked my husband a million questions which just frustrated him because he’s not as invested in this whole chicken thing like I am.
I just have no words...

Ugh so sorry. I think EE's are to adventurous for their own good. Mine was trying to come out and the dog was right there. I had to gently kick her back, but she really didn't care

Darn raccoons are back again. Well they probably never left, but I haven't seen them in a while. At 2:22 am my GSD was barking, he never barks. He was barking and squeezing his ball--this is what he does to release that energy(he is a high drive working dog). I run out there and there in the tree is at least one, possibly two. This is about 10 ft from the run. For one hour I heard him. Everytime it made a move to come down he barked and jumped at the fence.

I just started at my new location for work and it just stinks. I have thought about leaving earlier but I can't knowing those raccoons are there. They are definitely more active in the mornings(Midnite to 5am or so). So for the next couple months my hours are all over the place.

These raccoons have to know the dogs are here and can come out at any time. I'm hoping that this is enough to keep them away from the inside of the yard and run. I really don't want my dog to attack and kill a raccoon either. I want peace amongst all. They can stay in the tree on the other side of the fence and leave the chickens alone and everything will be fine.

Exactly!
They’re extremely adventurous and love to explore and investigate everything.
I even used to say I wouldn’t ever get any because of that trait.
I still have Taka and she will fly up on the fence too but not as much as Skye did.
Skye was extremely independent and adventurous.
It was always Silver one of our Silver Penciled Rocks that would go over there with her.
We did some temporary work on the chain link fence and added another 3’ of wire fence above it.
It’s now about 7’ high.
Silver did try to go over today and fell back in. :yesss:
We weren’t able to cover the gate yet though.
DH is working hard at getting the privacy fence done!
I walked the neighborhood and saw no signs of Skye.
It’s like she never existed.
We think the dogs owners disposed of her in hopes that nobody witnessed what it did.

Editing because somehow what I wrote didn't show up. I have a habit of hitting stray keys that in one combination or another affect what I write!

I'm so sorry for your loss of Skye. I hope you end up finding her, not knowing has to be terribly difficult to bear

Raccoons. We have them around all the time too. We live in the city but have a parkway behind our house so a loooong narrowish stretch of woods and a river. Great place for city raccoons to hang out. Not to mention foxes, coyotes, and various raptors. My only hope is they've never seen a chicken before and will opt for the easier pickin's of garbage carts, lol.
I've done everything I can to predator proof the coop and run as we all have, even so far as to padlock the door and the egg door every night. The other day my daughter, who lives a half mile away, saw a fox walking down the street right in front of her house. I can only hope what I've done is enough. The thought of losing one of my sweet chickens is, well, unthinkable.
