2018 Newbie Chat!

Look at that handsome boy!
He’s such a great guy.
I used to wonder about their feet too.
But the skin is thick, scaled and very different than the skin under their feathers.
I always make sure they have a place to go that’s free from snow and let them decide if they want to go out or not.
Last winter I only had 5 birds and they went out pretty much every day.
They would go find the sunny spots in the yard and hang out there in the early mornings.
They did very well.
They only seemed bugged by falling through the top of the snow when they walked on it.
My bantam rooster was able to walk on top without breaking through

I am completely in love with Prince. I've been lucky with him and he has taught me a lot. In the third picture, right to the left of him is a small opening that Precious(also pictured with him) likes to escape. He will call for me if she gets out, but he has gotten smart and he stays in the area when she is over there and he stops her from escaping. He gets his exercise because when some of them come out a couple always stay in, so he runs back and forth between the girls. They definitely keep him busy. He has the softest noises he makes when he finds something yummy and they really all come running when he calls. All the girls love him. He has not resorted to tricking them yet..lol

I really like that he does not over mate the girls and he has not pulled a feather yet. I love that he crows to get my attention. He is pretty quiet unless he knows I'm home. When he knows im home he will crow until I come out there, especially if I go to check on them and just walk away. That is not enough for him. He literally sounds like he is screaming get back here...makes me smile every time he does it, because I understand exactly what he is doing. He has a weird attachment to me. It's like he trusts me and likes me being there, but then we have the two flogging incidents, so I carry a stick just in case. I hate carrying it, but I want to make sure he can't get me. He don't like that stick, but I don't like getting flogged...lol

I look back at their baby pictures often because I'm amazed at what they turn into. I spent a lot of time with original 4, they were in the house forever.

Got the run done. I don't get how these little creatures do so well in the cold. I don't care that they have feathers, how do their little feet not freeze? They were not phased by the snow either. Nothing stops them. Of course I was about frozen but I refuse to do unsupervised time out of the run, so I stood out there with them for a while.

Wonderful pictures, they look to be really happy foraging in the snow, the little darlings.

What cuties, handsome and beautiful from the get go.
Do you have any pictures you could post of your boy who lives in the house with you? I just curious - how is he doing btw?

Jellybean had a bit of a relapse earlier today but has still been eating and drinking well and seemed to perk up later on. My duck hen has her voice slowly coming back to normal and isn't sneezing as much. On the whole everyone seems to be improving so hopefully they all will be over this virus soon. Roo is back to her usual self, she is growing so fast she is 14 weeks and is already bigger than the other three and with her winter coat she looks like a big puff ball, so cute :love

I have to get pictures of him. He is enjoying life. He gets to listen to Christmas music now. I think that once I get his area ready outside in Spring that I will bring him in for the winter. Keeping 3 areas in the winter does not appeal to me whatsoever.

I saw this on Princes head..does anyone know what it could be? I thought frostbite but I don't think his comb goes that far back. I posted over in the injury thread already. I know it's not pecking, none of them peck him at all ever

I think maybe the weather being crazy may have brought it on. I know it's been crazy here, no time to acclimate. Hopefully all will be recovered soon.
