2020 Peafowl Chat Thread

I'm surprised the peafowl didn't kill them. I've found that only the really aggressive pheasants like silvers and reeves can hold their own against peafowl. Especially during breeding season

@barkerg also runs other birds in with his peas, with his Greens too without problems. Parokeets and some Chackalakalaka chicken that lives in trees.

No aggression from the peas at all, what I didn't like was that Peach Golden would flush every time I came into the run and the peas would feel like they had to also. That is a far cry from the calm birds that would come up to me wanting treats.
Mine harassed a silver rooster and killed a mikado hen I will never mix breeding age peafowl with pheasants again only chicks and yearlings.

We put one GCU per pen to help control the grass.

Our plan for this year is only slightly different than last year. Still trying to make bronze white eyed possible black shoulders (not sure if our male is split or not) and blue split bronze white eyed. I also picked up 3 India blue white eyed males that are 50% shot being split cameo I wanted to try to prove out but I never ended up getting them any girlfriends. We were to busy building a small herd of dexter cattle instead:lau.

I’ll honestly be happy if we can produce anything considering last year was a disaster. Only got 6 eggs before a respiratory issue popped up and had to treat everyone, and the only egg that decided to develop died halfway thru hatching. Also had 1 hatch from the eggs we got from @Kedreeva and it died at 2 weeks old.

We’ve seen lots of strutting and dancing but no breeding so far. :fl With 4 cocks and 2 hens I sure hope we get eggs or I find more girls soon.

@casportpony
I took my Peahen Jael to the vet for what I think is respiratory issues. One eye swollen and shut, and mouth gapeing. At first I just thought she got pecked in the eye for bullying the other peafowl as she is the Queen and let's everyone know it. I noticed this 6 days ago.

However the swelling got worse so we took her to the vet 3 days ago. She had a fever of 107!

He gave her a shot in the breast of 1cc Tylan and instructed my husband to do it for 3 more days.
After those days of the shots is it safe to introduce her back into the community pen?
Can I then worm all of the birds together?

Oh no, sorry she is sick. :hugs Is she responding to the Tylan? And was this an avian vet that saw her? I ask because Tylan is supposed to be given at pretty high doses three times a day, not once a day. Also, Tylan injections can cause severe injection site necrosis, so I would give it orally instead.

No he's not an avian vet, he's more comfortable dealing with cows, horses, cats and dogs.
We live by 4 towns of less than 5,000 people. So not much to choose from.
He had to Google what to give her, lol.
She doesn't seem to be improving at all, but she's also pouting because I put her in a pen so it would be easier to catch her every day.

Call your vet and ask for some Baytril (enrofloxacin). Can you post some pictures of her eyes? Do you have a current weight?

7 pounds. It's a 30 minute drive to the vet and I have 2 more doses of Tylan to give. I'd like to use it first since I paid for it. Are you saying to give the 1 cc orally instead of injection?

Is it Tylan 50 or Tylan 200?
The Tylan 50 dose for a 7-pound chicken is no less than 1.4 ml 3-4 times a day
The Tylan 200 dose for a 7-pound chicken is no less than 0.35 ml 3-4 times a day
