I've done that too. I have tons of good memories of Linux Mint on that thing.

All kidding aside, mow some lawns and stuff to make some cash. You can build a reasonable rig for 5-700 USD these days with minimal effort. If you go with like a Ryzen G sku with a built-in APU, even less, probably 400 US. And a windows 10 key is like 25 more.

The SSD is tiny and you'd need more, but you get the idea. I'm all for dinking around with old gear as a playtime activity, but not as a mainline system.

I do it more for fun. Right now mainline system here is a ThinkPad X260. Works ok, but I'd like something that doesn't get hung up all day.

You can get some pretty high end refurbs now for several hundred. Can't build anything for what the refurbs are going for.

I usually buy used stuff. Saves a good chunk of money. So if I built my own the parts are probably going to be used so I can save a little bit (except the SSD).
