Open Contest 2026 BYC Calendar Photo Contest - We Need Your Pictures!

I find that overcast days are better with mine.
Agreed, overcast conditions often provide better lighting for photography than bright sunny days. Backlighting can produce cool effects, but more often it just makes it harder to see the subject. It can also make it harder for auto focus to work fast enough for live animals. And with solid birds, especially white or black, it can make it night on impossible to capture any details.

Not an entry (pretty sure it won't fit the template)

this is one of my favorite photos, taken at sunset and you can clearly see the clouds in the sky

Edit: I should also add I shoot video and pull stills from that. Anytime I'd try to take pictures they'd either get spooked by something and run off or move their heads. :barnie
Quick thing and I don't mean to interrupt your conversation but I don't recommend you doing that. Screenshots aren't allowed (and yes, even without the typical black bars, we can still tell that the picture is a screenshot). See rule #11 ⬇️
No screenshots, watermarks, date stamps, text, etc., on the photo. No collages.
Also, from taking pictures out of a video, not only will you be losing photo quality (which risks your photo getting scored lower), but it could also hurt the size making it harder to judge. See rules #3 and #9 ⬇️
High-quality images are recommended.
Images that have been resized will be disqualified if they are too small to judge.

Aside from all of that, what type of camera are you using? Some cameras have a Sports (sometimes called Kids) setting that is specifically for action shots and works good with chickens. ;)
