I have a goose that cracked through the shell yesterday at 1pm. Since then it has made a nice dime sized hole in the side of the shell and is perfectly content on staying there I guess. I know it is still alive because I can see its bill every now and then and I can hear it peeping. My humidity is around 70 and I have not opened the incubator since 430 am to add some water. Advice please!

I had the same issue with my gosling. He was stuck in position with a hole on the side and was not progressing. After 24 hours I took the egg out of the incubator and started to peel the shell back a little to see what was going on. The membrane was holding him into place and was white and almost dry. So I proceeded to peel the membrane back and saw no blood. That confirmed that he was shrink wrapped. The egg was rather long shaped and not very wide not leaving much room for him to turn. I continued all the way down to the half mark of the egg removing more shell and membrane. Never saw a drop of blood. I stopped at the half mark and put him back into the incubator and 30 minutes later he was out. So if you help out always stop when you see blood and wait for 4 hours before continuing. Never pull out the baby or you can cause major damaging bleedings or even rupturing the yolk, which can be deadly.

Please, don't mess with the gosling. Goslings can take up to 48 hours to hatch. All the sudden lately I'm reading 24 hours, where did this come from?? I have yet to have a gosling hatch within 24 hours of pipping! It takes alot of energy to hatch and goslings use alot of energy trying to hatch. They're slower, more sluggish and just generally take longer.

And after they hatch it can take up to 48 hours for them to get up and start moving around. I've hatched out 47 goslings this breeding season and I can honestly say that not a single one has hatched much before the 48 hour mark after they pipped.

thank you both for the advice. Our little one is out now and resting. My first gosling ever, we have about 15 more to go. I am waiting patiently:fl

I think I wasn't clear. The egg did pip and later the gosling created this hole. It was sitting with this open hole and it bill sticking out for 24 hours and not zipping along. That is when I helped and obviously it was ready, because I never saw any blood when I helped. You are right helping to early does more harm then good.

Nice to hear that the gosling is out.

one more thing- how soon after they hatch do they need fed? I would like to leave him in the incubator until we get at least one more ready to go to the brooder. Probably at least another 12 to 18 hours?
