24/7 light bulb in coop (what if?)

I have had on the red heat lamp for about 2 1/2 weeks straight 24/7. The floor is 14 degrees, the nest boxes are 36 degrees and just under the lamp is anywhere from 28 - 38 degrees. My coop is built into the barn and this is my first winter with them. Last week it was very cold like -18 degrees at night, yes that's negative 18. We are in the process of getting a infared heater placed in the barn, we got it all hooked up yesterday and found a crack on one of the fittings so we will be delayed even longer with the heat problem. They seem to be fine, eating great, drinking about 1 gallon of water each day, the only problem I have is when I walk in with gloves on and I don't pay attention to the little burgers they jump up and snatch my glove right off my hand then run around and play keep away with me.

I would really like to turn the heat lamp off at night but I've had 5 frozen eggs in the nest boxes so I have to wait.

I've been getting 4 - 6 eggs per day but most are just starting to lay. I think I have a brand new layer cuz I got a small pinkish egg from I believe one of my Buffs. The heater light is the only light I have on all day and they have a window for the afternoon time. After the heater is in I will have to supplement with a white light cuz we will only have 3 or 4 hours of sunlight come December.

I am having to keep one on with by Silkie and her babies at night because is been getting so cold here. I have it down in a corner so I am hoping it doesn't bother the other hens. The babies and Mom will go to the light and perch up very close. The others don't seem to pay it much attention. I also keep one on my Sultans because they cannot take much cold, but i have located a heat disc that does not light up so I am going to order a couple of those and see how they work.

You could use a RED heat bulb instead of a white one, the red keeps them more calm... Also what kind of heat disc's did you find ?? Could you let me know the site your going to order them from ? They should interesting !!

I'm also interested in why your leaving a light on 24/7. Is it because your coop doesn't get any light in it? In mine it's so dark (after daylight hours) that you can't see your hand in front of your face. I was having egg laying issues from them being upset about not being able to see at all. I added one of those 7 1/2 watt night light bulbs and it's like having moon and star light. It resolved the issue and is cheaper to run than the larger watt bulbs. 7 1/2 watt is as low as you can go with for a reg. light socket but, if you have extra plugins a reg. nightlight can go down to 4 watts. Plus, you can get the type that come on and go off automatically.

This is the site where I found these. If anyone has tried them please let me know. They are expensive but supposed to last 5 years.
